Aloha Friday: To Kill or Not to Kill

Aloha! Kailani is the brain-child behind this fun Friday meme. If you feel inclined to answer my question, please post your answer in the comment section. Sound fun? Of course it does! Want to answer more questions? Hop over to An Island Life and play along!

(Please feel free to answer the question below, even if you’re not playing Aloha Friday!)

My question:

For an all-expense paid, one week vacation anywhere in the world, would you be willing to kill a beautiful butterfly by pulling off it’s wings? What about stepping on a cockroach?

My answer:

Aargh! Trick question! If I say yes to both the butterfly and the cockroach, I sound cold and ruthless. But if I say no to the butterfly and yes to the cockroach, am I saying that only beautiful creatures deserve to live? (And for the record, I squash cockroaches – no qualms. I’m just playing devil’s advocate here).

I’m going to be selfish here – I would definitely squish the cockroach and I’d probably kill the butterfly.

It’s all expenses paid to anywhere, folks. Let’s be real here.

I wouldn’t feel bad about the cockroach, but the guilt from the butterfly just might ruin my vacay.

(My questions are hard, right?? hehe)

  1. I wouldn’t kill either, whatever the ‘reward’. I’m a vegetarian and also a Wiccan; most Wiccans believe that the devine is in nature so we should treat it with respect, including the icky bits.
If a bug got into my home I’d just put it outside.

  2. The answer here from me: “Done!”

My husband, not so much. He feels bad for squishing a spider. Not sure he’ll be able to eat the turkeys I’m planning on raising this year.

  3. Sure! I’d kill a butterfly and a cockroach for a fully paid vacation to anywhere!
Normally I don’t really care for any insects enough to kill it if I find/see them outdoors, but if I find them inside my home … I’d kill it in a heartbeat, squash it, or use use a bug spray. Curiously, so far, I haven’t found a stray butterfly in my home.

  4. Can I make my husband do it? Even still… I dunno just reading that question made me shudder and mentally go “eek!” I don’t think I could ever intentionally hurt a butterfly to be honest and I feel a bit mean saying I’d feel less bad for the cockroach, but I would… but I still don’t think I’d do it. But if my husband did it, I’d go on vacation with him…

  5. I know. It sounds cold. And I see your point – it’s a valid argument. It’s the principle of the thing.

But it’s an insect. I don’t value the life of an insect and perhaps that’s wrong. But if we valued the lives of insects and didn’t kill them, i.e. control their population, can you imagine what our world would be like?

    Think Alfred Hitchcock movie here.

Now I would never consider the possibility of an animal, or a human – of course. But an insect? Yes. I would probably do it. And I have even less remorse for disgusting insects like a cockroach. Which again, rather measures life by it’s beauty, doesn’t it.

I love questions that make you think – there is no cut and dried answer, is there.

  6. So If I kill I get a vacation? Nope. Its the detailed Idea that one must kill in order to win…it doesn’t matter if it’s a butterfly or a cockroach, ant, beetle, fly, human.
lets just say you did ‘kill’ for the win, where in the world would you not feel like sht for doing what you did? Can one really seriously have fun with that?
Now on the other hand I will kill any bug that intrudes my household with little remorse. So what is the real answer? hmmm. The Lesser anttiles kinda sounds good right about now! You shall live another day bug.
