Abundant Life

Teaching: The Sacrifice of Jesus Christ

Every Sunday I provide videos and valuable links to the Truth or Tradition teachings. We’ve been following the Truth or Tradition teachings for many years now and they have truly blessed our family. We have found peace and happiness through our beliefs and we walk confidently for God. My hope, by passing on this information to you, is that what you find here, or on the Truth or Tradition website, will guide you to a better, more blessed and abundant life.

If you would like to read my views on religion and how we got started with the ministry, you can read this.

Let’s get started:

In this article, I want to focus on the definition of a “sacrifice.” We will examine what it was that Jesus sacrificed, what were the benefits to him (and thereby to us) for his doing so, and what it will look like for us to follow in his steps. I think it will become clear that we too should be making sacrifices in our own lives for the good of others.

1 Corinthians 5:7 and 8 (NKJV)
(7) Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.
(8) Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

There is much figurative language in the above verses, but the point I want us to notice here is that the truth in verse 7—that Jesus gave his life for our sins—is the basis for the action that verse 8 encourages us to take—to live our lives with sincerity and truth. As Scripture says, Jesus Christ is the example for each of us, and we are therefore to walk in his steps (1 Pet. 2:21). Let us look at a contemporary dictionary definition of sacrifice: “The surrender or destruction of something prized or desirable for the sake of something considered as having a higher or more pressing claim.”

Now that is provocative. Think about it—this connotes a value system in which one thing, while deemed valuable and thus not easily let go of, is not considered as valuable as another thing in one’s overall estimation. This involves the exercise of one’s free will and the power we each have to make choices.

What was Jesus called to sacrifice? His very life. Psalm 22 prophetically depicts the crucifixion, resurrection, and exaltation of the Messiah, with the first 18 verses pointing to his torture and death, and the last 10 verses pointing to his resurrection and his reign in the Millennial Kingdom. In between are the following pivotal verses, which poignantly foreshadow his crying out to God for deliverance from the grave.

Psalm 22:19-21 (NKJV)
(19) But You, O LORD, do not be far from Me; O My Strength, hasten to help Me!
(20) Deliver Me from the sword, My precious life from the power of the dog.
(21) Save Me from the lion’s mouth And from the horns of the wild oxen! You have answered Me.

In that vein, it is noteworthy to compare the attitude of Socrates just prior to his death with that of Jesus Christ before his impending torture and execution. Socrates threw a party, gathering his friends to help him celebrate his exodus from this life via drinking the poison hemlock. Jesus, on the other hand, agonized alone in the Garden of Gethsemane to such an extent that the Greek text says he was “crushed with anguish” (Luke 22:44-NKJV “being in agony”).

Why the stark difference in their attitudes? Was it because Socrates had a better understanding of life than Jesus did? No, it was because Jesus had a truer understanding of death than did Socrates. Socrates erroneously believed what many people today believe (even most Christians), that death is the immediate “doorway” to a better life in some other realm.

Jesus Christ, however, knew the truth that death, as accurately defined in the Word of God, is “the end, or the absence of, life.” By definition, one cannot be both dead and alive. Jesus knew, therefore, that if he chose to step into the theretofore unbridged abyss of death, the only way back to life would be via his heavenly Father keeping His promise to raise him from the dead (Gen. 22:1-13; Ps. 16:10). That is why, in absolute contrast to Socrates, Jesus’ decision to sacrifice his life was not a flippant one.

What were the promised benefits that motivated Jesus Christ to lay down his precious life, which was most definitely “something prized or desirable” to him. What was the stupendous “something [that he] considered as having a higher or more pressing claim” compared to the preservation of his own life? The following verses answer that question:

Hebrews 12:1 and 2
(1) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
(2) Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The “joy set before” Jesus was the great truth woven throughout the Old Testament that if he would go the distance as the only man who could live a sinless life and die a torturous death as the true Passover Lamb, he would be raised to newness of life, and so would all those who ever believed on him. He would reign over the world for a thousand years and later rule as second-in-command to God on a new earth, enjoying everlasting life with all the redeemed throughout the ages.

Because Jesus knew who he was, and that there was no one else who could do what he was called to do, he chose to walk the path set before him, which called for him to sacrifice his life. Now you and I are members in particular of the Body of Christ, representing him in this fallen world. So who are you? What are you called to sacrifice? And how will that look, behaviorally speaking? What will the benefits be to you for so doing?

Photo Story Friday

Photo Story Friday: Ho Ho

What a wonderful excuse to scan old pictures and bore you to tears!!

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

I have a TON of old pictures that I need to scan, so hang onto your hats, Fridays are going to get nostalgic.

Let’s start at the beginning, shall we?

First Christmas - circa 87 or 88

Me and Kevin in front of our pitiful Christmas tree in the apartment that we shared. I was around 22 25 and Kevin was 26 29. This was before we were married (*gasp* yes, we lived together before tying the knot) and I’m thinking it was either 1987 or 1988. I’m not exactly sure which, but I’d guess ’87 This would have been 1990 judging by the empty tree branches, and the fact that we’re wearing wedding rings (thanks Heidi!). Yeah, we were THAT poor. We couldn’t even afford decorations for our tree.

Look at how CUTE my husband is!! Wow. What a babe. RAWR.

And yes, *sigh* I was one THOSE women who wore dorky holiday sweaters/sweatshirts. And I think I’m wearing Christmas earrings too, though it’s hard to see. (Okay fine, I still wear dorky holiday sweaters, hush).

My hair? I used to hot roll my hair every day and I swear, I spent an hour each day JUST on my hair. I was never so glad to see straight hair come back into fashion in my life.

So was Kevin. 😛

I also want to know what color lipstick I’m wearing because I like it! (This is probably one of six photos with me wearing lipstick – I simply don’t do it very often).

Kevin wouldn’t be caught dead in sweaters now.

And it’s good to know I had THUNDER thighs even back then.

That’s strangely comforting.

Friday Craft: You Can Make it Yourself

So, I ran across this really cool website called “You Can Make This.”

http://youcanmakethis.com
http://youcanmakethis.com

From the site:

YouCanMakeThis.com was created by a stay-at-home mom who wanted to provide a place where women could learn how to make items for their homes and families. The site is unique because the eBooks and patterns are written by “everyday” women. The step-by-step format of the eBooks enables even the most craft-challenged person to experience the satisfaction of creating something beautiful.

YouCanMakeThis.com provides easy to follow how-to eBooks on a variety of projects. The eBooks feature detailed step-by-step instructions and photos that walk you through the creative process. Popular categories include clothing creation, quilting, crochet, jewelry, home decor, and more.

Doesn’t that sound like fun? I’ve also included this website on my list of “approved” retailers for both the quarterly photo contest and Coffee Chat (which is happening now and actually ends today if you want a chance to win a $25 gift certificate to the “You Can Make This” website).

Here are some crafts from the site that caught my eye:

Floppy Eared Bunny Silly Hat – Crochet Pattern: $6.38

Strappy Sundress- Sizes 1-6: $9.95

The Abigail Photo Bag: $9.99

The Booty Bag: $8.95 (A fun way to recycle those jeans the kids outgrow).

Anyway, I thought this site was a fun alternative to store-bought stuff AND it saves money while making memories.

(By the way, I did not get paid to pass this information on to you. I saw the site, thought it was cute and felt compelled to talk about it. I don’t accept paid advertisements, but if I ever do, I’ll let you know).

Have fun!

My Twitter Entries – Revealed

If you follow me on Twitter (and why wouldn’t you??), this is most likely old news. But I thought I would round up the interesting sites I have run across in the past couple of days because they’re worth mentioning again:

WHERE has this site been all my blogging life?? – Mother of All Conservatives. This blog is, as implied, a blog for conservative mothers, written by conservative mothers, and I love what I’ve been reading so far.

Stumbling across this blog has just reinforced the growing suspicion that I was hanging out with the wrong crowd. Duly noted.

Dale, my good buddy and pal from Write Anything, has taken on the GINORMOUS task of paying tribute to the 2,996 people who died in the September 11th attacks. It’s called Project 2,996 and here’s what it’s about:

Project 2,996 is an online initiative to get people to learn about–and remember–the victim’s of 9/11.

Choose one of the names from the list, research it, learn about the person, and post a tribute to your blog, website, or where ever, so others can learn about that person.

But most important, it’s a way to remember their lives and not the terrible, public way they were taken from us.

I participated and paid tribute to one of the fallen 2,996 one year and it was an … emotional experience for me. I was even visited by the gentleman’s family where they thanked me for taking the time to remember their son.

I firmly believe that we should continue talking about, and remembering, what happened on September 11th – both to honor the memory of those that died that day, and to ensure that we never allow this sort of attack on American soil again.

So please, spread Project 2996 around and let’s see if we can’t remember each and every victim once again on September 11, 2009.

hotbyblogher1 Going to BlogHer? I found a fun new blog called Hot by BlogHer and it’s all about helping you get in shape for the big conference.

Want to join in? Then start now by thinking about what you want to do to be your best – be hot – by BlogHer. Maybe you want to lose some weight, or just tone up to look great in short sleeves and a cute cocktail dress. Maybe you want more self-esteem so you aren’t overcome by debilitating shyness around your fellow bloggers. Whether your goal is external, internal or both, I’m hoping you’ll find motivation and support here.

Starting next week (March 16), I’ll have a weekly challenge available for you. Each week will have a fitness challenge, a diet challenge, and a personal challenge. Pick one and do your best to complete the challenge that week. At the end of the week, report in here and tell everyone how you did.

You’re more than welcome to join in, even if you’re not going to BlogHer – it’s all about forming a support group to help get in shape for summer. And that is definitely one of my goals!

Speaking of summer …

I hopped over to Old Navy the other day (as in online, what, you think I’d actually set foot in the store?! Puhlease, ya’ll know me better than that! *grin*) and I ended up buying these two summer tops:

tanks

Cute, right?

Well, I received the tanks yesterday and when I tried them all, I loved them both right away. The only thing is, I’m going to have to have a tan before wearing them because they do a pretty good job of washing me out right now. But I was planning on starting the whole tanning bed routine next month …

But here’s the thing, I don’t know what sort of bra to wear with these. I mean, I don’t really have a problem with showing my bra straps, but I’d prefer not to. Other than a strapless bra (which are so uncomfortable, IMO), can you suggest another type of bra I could wear with these? I plan on wearing these on the cruise and it would be nice if I didn’t APPEAR to have come from hillbilly country, ya know? I have a strapless bra, but I’d really like something with a little more support.

AND, even though I love these tanks, they aren’t something I normally wear so I’m a little (okay, a lot) self-conscious about the mustard one because WOW, cleavage! I never wear shirts that show cleavage because well, my girls are sort of hard to miss when I draw attention to them and it makes me really uncomfortable to have men pretend they aren’t looking at them. And the purple one? Makes me look pregnant but I love it because it hides my poochy belly and I’m thinking this will be a PLUS on the cruise because I could pig out and no one would be the wiser.

Hhmm … I think I’ll buy more of those, actually. 😀

*sigh* The things I do to shake things up in my marriage …

Anyway, I’m now on the lookout for some cute tops like these but with sleeves – I know, Old Navy has some BUT, I’m looking for tops that DON’T have the cap sleeves because hello?! Grandma arms here. Cap sleeves just make me look like a football player. Seriously, what design genius thought it was a good idea to make tops with cap sleeves? A. either a man, or B. a woman with no arm fat.

If you’ve seen some cute spring/summer clothes anywhere, please share!

lazy-girl See this button? I actually laughed out loud when I saw it (you know how you think people actually laugh out loud when you see the word “lol” but they aren’t really laughing out loud? I really did laugh out loud).

So, I followed it. And now I’m hooked on the Worthington Wire site. These are the types of sites I haunt because they have all of the interesting links going on. In fact, a lot of the links I put on Twitter come from sites like this.

I just spilled one of my secrets – proof-positive that I love you guys.

I’m trying to hurry up and finish this post so I can publish it BEFORE my head explodes. It was almost 80 degrees here the other day and now it’s in the low-30’s. My sinuses are complaining – loudly.

Proof positive that I’m a complete and total dweeb:

"Trying" to be Cool - Fail

Trying to be cool here – FAIL.

You can see why my boys refuse to go any where with me.

(WHY does my thumb look so … purple?? Gross).
