Searching …

She had been missing for two months.

The police tried to help but since she was 19 years old they said that maybe she just took off to begin her new life

I knew better. She wasn’t the type of girl to just disappear without talking to her parents first.

“An anonymous source gave us her description. This might not even be her,” the police officer apologized.

I took a steady breath and looked around at the homeless kids huddled in dirty street corners.

The officer reached a large, covered cardboard box.

“Ready?”

I nodded.

He reached a hand out. The curtain parted …

Smart Enough to Know That Something Was Terribly Wrong

He had never been accused of being intelligent but Donald knew enough that he needed to help his momma.

She was lying on the floor and her lips were blue.

They didn’t have a phone in the apartment. His momma said they couldn’t afford one and her cell phone.

He didn’t know how to use her cell phone.

Donald poked her in the arm and began chanting, “Momma. Momma. Momma.”

He began crying, his voice rising until he was wailing.

Their neighbor pounded on the wall. “Shut up, retard!”

He cried harder.

He stumbled up, yanked open the door and stepped out into the big, scary world.

Seating Arrangements

Persia absently tapped a small, white placard against her lips as she walked around the room to survey the seating arrangements.

“Perfect,” she muttered. She was confident she had separated the problem guests and that there would be minimal drama during the wedding reception.

She couldn’t put it off any longer; the moment of truth had arrived.

She glanced down at the name on the card.

Everything depended upon this single card…

She carefully weighed the pros and cons of placing the card where it belonged.

Pro: taken care of – Con: she didn’t like the man.

Sighing, she placed the card at the groom’s place setting.

On Loan

The woman’s face on the card mocked her. She placed her thumb over the tiny photo and inserted it into the machine.

“Hurry up!” her boyfriend hissed while keeping an eye out for anyone approaching the tiny, glass room.

Melanie ignored him and entered in the four-digit security code. She finished punching in her demands and waited.

The machine whirred and clicked, but nothing came out.

“Are you freaking kidding me?” Dylan shouted.

“Shh!” Melanie stared at the machine. She jumped as it came to life and the ATM machine began dispensing twenties.

Dylan smiled.

She scooped up the cash but felt sad.

“I’m sorry, grandma.”

Sacrifice

“For you.”

They stopped at the street corner. Daryl handed her a pink package wrapped in a white bow.

“What? How did you …” Shelly blinked and took the package.

He gave her a sheepish smile.

“Daryl. I don’t want to be a couple,” she said sternly.

He shrugged. “We’re friends. Friends give each other birthday gifts”

She pulled the card out while they walked across the street.

“I’d catch a grenade for ya.”

She laughed. “You and your military references. I swear …”

A car shot through the intersection. With lightening speed, Daryl pushed her out of the way.

The car struck him.

She screamed.

The Situation is Worse Than You Think

The paramedics leaned over the woman, effectively blocking most of her body from the spectators. Their expressions were calm, but their eyes were concerned.

They worked on stabilizing the patient for nearly 90 seconds before they noticed it: a blood stain on her abdomen. It was growing bigger by the minute.

“Mommy! Wake up! Mommy please!” A little girl, not more than six-years old, screamed. Her voice sent shivers up the spectaculars’ spines. A man held her back so she wouldn’t fling herself on the injured woman.

“She’ll be fine,” one paramedic said out loud.

Their eyes met over the body.

It was a lie.

Sometimes, Family Secrets Should Remain a Secret

She lifted the stack of letters from the ancient chest and carried them to a nearby window for light. She glanced surreptitiously toward the door.

It took her three hours to read through the letters, each one more shocking than the one before. When she had finished the last one, she abruptly stood up and began pacing the length of the attic – the previously cherished documents scattered around her feet like yesterday’s garbage.

She felt sick. This had to be a nightmare. She released a long, torturous groan and began to cry. It explained so many things; it answered so many questions.

Just how many “wives” did her husband have?
