Friday Craft: Gifts for Mom

I always love to browse the Family Fun site to look at their new and cute crafts. I never DO them, but I like to LOOK at them. πŸ™‚

Here are a few of my favorite craft (and cupcake!) ideas for Mother’s Day.

Hand-Colored Oven Mitts
oven-mitt

Tap kid’s creativity to turn plain oven mitts and pot holders into handy kitchen art fit for gift-giving.

CRAFT MATERIALS:
Oven mitt or pot holder
Pencil and paper
Colored fabric markers

Time needed: Under 1 Hour
1. Trace the oven mitt or pot holder onto a sheet of paper and experiment with different designs.

2. Next, resketch the perfected design on the mitt and color it in with the fabric markers.

Tips: We recommend using Marvy or FabricMate brand pens.

Lamb Pin
ewe-pin

Give Mom a case of the warm and fuzzies with this fluffy little lamb pin — or make one for the “shear” pleasure of it!

CRAFT MATERIALS:
Brown craft foam
Bulky textured yarn
Scissors
1 1/2-inch pinback
Tacky glue
Googly eye

Time needed: About 1 to 2 Hours
1. Draw a simple sheep on the foam and cut it out; ours was about 3 1/4 inches long. You can also download a printable template here.

2. Wrap a length of yarn (ours was 6 feet) around the sheep as shown, evenly covering the neck, belly, and between the legs.

3. When you have about 1 1/2 feet of yarn left, open up the pinback and lay it flat side down on the back of the sheep.

4. Wrap the yarn around the belly to hold the pin in place. Close the pin and firmly tuck in any remaining yarn. Glue on the eye.

Beauty Mask

This eye pillow, filled with lavender and flaxseed, is a Mother’s Day gift that actually takes something away: stress!

CRAFT MATERIALS:
Flannel-backed satin fabric
Glue
16-inch length elastic
Funnel
5 tablespoons flaxseed
3 tablespoons dried lavender

Time needed: Under 1 Hour
1. Cut two pillow pieces from flannel-backed satin (download our template here). On the satin side of one piece, use tacky glue to attach rickrack edging and two 2-inch lengths of black fringe fabric trim eyelashes. Trim the fringe if necessary.

Everyday Fun Homemade Beauty Mask: Step 2 2. Run a line of glue around the flannel-side edge of the other fabric piece, leaving an inch-wide gap (shown in photo A, marked by waxed paper). Glue the ends of a 16-inch length of elastic to the flannel (A). Lay the other fabric piece on top, satin side up, and gently press the pieces together. After the glue dries, use a funnel to pour 5 tablespoons of flaxseed and 3 tablespoons of dried lavender into the opening (B) and glue it closed.

3. Before using the pillow, heat it in a microwave for about 20 seconds to warm the flaxseed and release the lavender scent.

Driveway Signs
driveway-signs

What you see is not all you get with these adorable driveway markers. By day, the plaques add color and a decorative touch to your yard. At night, the signs shine as beams of approaching headlights bounce off the reflective-tape moon and stars.

CRAFT MATERIALS:
Pencil
Wood (we used scrap lumber, but you can also use wooden plaques from a craft store)
Paintbrush
Acrylic paints
Scissors
Reflective tape (we used Duck brand)
Drill
Wooden stakes
Screws
Twigs
Hammer and nails

Time needed: Afternoon or Evening
1. Download our templates for the signs shown here, or create your own design. Lightly trace the pattern on the wood, then paint.

2. When the paint is dry, cut moon and star shapes from the reflective tape and apply them to the plaque.

3. Use the drill to make pilot holes in the stake (a parent’s job), then screw the stake to the back of the plaque.

4. To prevent the twigs from splitting, create pilot holes with the drill and a small bit (a parent’s job). Nail the twigs in place. If desired, a parent can instead drill holes in the plaque and insert the twigs, as we did with the owl design.

Sew Sweet Cupcakes
mom-cupcakes

No seamstress skills are required to make these Mother’s Day cupcakes. The stitches are made of licorice lace.

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
Frosted cupcakes
Licorice lace (we used Twizzler Pull-n-Peel)

1. Use 1/4-inch pieces of lace to form letters or hearts. For the needle, tie a longer length of lace around an end of a toothpick, then stick the toothpick and one end of the lace into the cupcake.

Photo Story Friday

Photo Story Friday: Catching Some ZzZ’s

Oh look! Another wonderful excuse to scan old pictures and bore you to tears!! Yay!

Scan10441

I know.

I have a big butt.

But let’s move past the butt (if you can) and look at the fact that my husband? Used to take pictures of me while I was sleeping and it used to irritate me.

In fact, he still likes to take pictures of me sleeping and it still irritates me.

I have no idea why I’m so interesting to him while I’m sleeping.

Maybe that’s when he likes me the best – when I’m unconscious and quiet. πŸ˜€

This had to have been taken before the boys came along.

Because I’m pretty sure I didn’t sleep long enough for my picture to be taken after they came along.

I feel a nap coming on.

‘Scuse me. ZzzZzzZz

Vlogemotions: Courage

This video carnival, aptly named Vlogemotions (get it? Video + blog + emotions = Vlogemotions) focuses on one specific emotion per week and is brought to you by Fort Thompson.

Here is my emotional contribution for the week:

In case you would like to learn more about the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) project, you can find their website here.

I think I’ll vlog whether or not I cracked open my novel next week. If anything else, that should motivate me to DO something about it, right?? I suppose my emotion for next week could range anywhere from ecstatic to depressed. We’ll find out next week.

Thanks for visiting! I’m really enjoying “meeting” so many new faces!!

How Many Sugar Cubes Do YOU Consume in a 24-Hour Period?

So, I was going to stuff a Twinkie in my mouth, (Kevin was craving them, which is the only reason we even bought them to begin with) and now they are taunting me every time I open the pantry and I see that bright yellow Twinkie dude on the package, (in fact, I can hear his wee-little voice calling to me now, “Kaaaaren …. oh Kaaaaren, I KNOW you’re out there. I can SMELL your need to consume me. Won’t you have just one wittle bite? Just one taste? What harm is one teensy-tiny bite?”) but then I saw this on the Sugar Stacks website:

twinkie

And changed my mind. Those four 1/2 sugar cubes have been seared into my brain. I’ve been working out nearly every day to try and get in shape for our family cruise, WHY would I undo everything I’ve done, and ooze all of that sweat and turn into a walking/talking zombie because I’m drained of all energy (temporarily) only to turn around and consume that much junk in three bites?

What a stupid waste of my time.

And I used to drink Starbucks’ Fraps all the time. Guess how much sugar I was consuming by drinking those little cups o’ heaven every day:

frapp

Egads.

I didn’t stop drinking Fraps because of the sugar (though if I had known this back then, I probably would have) but rather, there is something in Starbucks’ drinks that simply does not agree with me. I have all sorts of digestive problems whenever I drink any of their products and ever since cutting them out, I’ve had less problems (I still have problems, but NOTHING like I had when I was drinking Fraps).

But now that I know how much sugar I was consuming?

I can’t say that I miss it.

And honestly? THIS is the reason why I think obesity is so prevalent in our society today:

colas

THINK how much sugar people are consuming every day, sometimes twice, or even three times a day?! One can’t consume that much sugar and NOT gain weight – it’s impossible.

Soda is liquid sugar. Nothing more, nothing less.

Instead, I think I’ll make smarter choices and stick to this sort of snack:

cheerios

It may not be as tasty, but it’s certainly not going to set up camp in my belly and ask all of it’s fatty friends to come over and roast marshmallows, either.

Though this guy?

redbull-sugar

Well, he and I, we have a “thing” going. I like him. He likes me. And we often meet for lunch every other day to catch up on news and swap gossip.

But now that I know he’s carrying six 1/2 cubes of sugar? Well, I’m thinking I won’t be inviting him over to play …

as often.

You can find many more sobering sugar shots over at Sugar Stacks.

Tell me, how much sugar do you think you consume in a 24-hour period?

ADDED: I just read the Sugar Stacks blog and I find it very interesting that so many people are trying to discredit and/or are upset by what the Sugar Stacks people are doing – are people feeling guilty because they can no longer justify, or ignore, concrete images of the crap they are putting into their bodies?

I always think it’s rather a good thing whenever people start getting upset about things like this – it means they’re hitting a nerve and quite honestly? I think people, in general, need to wake up and stop fooling themselves. A little accountability, and self-analysis, never hurt anyone. Just my two cents.

Going to the Theater, And Not the Movie Kind

It was time to go. The weather was damp, but it wasn’t actually raining for once.

I was relieved.

I get cranky when it’s raining and I’m trying to maintain a fresh-dressed look. When my hair gets wet, it turns into the texture of limp straw and even though I always wear waterproof mascara, it always seems to smudge when it’s damp, leaving me looking like a surprised raccoon in the middle of rummaging for dinner.

And I wanted to look nice for our family outing.

I was a tad worried – were we dressed up enough? Would we look like beggars looking for a handout when standing next to the beautiful theater people? Whenever I think of the theater I think of the red carpet where everyone is dripping with sparkly accessories and glowing a burnt-orange color from their spray-on tans.

I needn’t have worried – everyone was casual.

Perhaps too much so. I was a little disappointed that people weren’t a little more dressed up simply because we do something like this so infrequently that making it a special occasion by admiring well-dressed people would have made it feel a little more … special somehow.

We met my in-laws there. My sister and brother-in-law also showed up, so it truly was a family affair. The biggest reason we decided to go to the play was because my nephew was acting in it and considering he’s been busy seriously acting for the past few years and we’ve never once seen him, we were starting to feel just a bit guilty by not offering our support for something he loved doing.

His face lit up when we talked to him afterwards and he seemed pleased that we had shown up.

Or he was acting like he was pleased.

Either way, I’m glad we went.

The play?

buddywebteelogo The Buddy Holly Story.

We sat in the balcony. My SIL requested the tickets and she apologized for the seats, but I actually prefer to sit up high – I appreciate the bird’s eye view of everything from up above.

The boys weren’t sure how to act. Jazz sat next to me and refused to remove his jacket and Dude sat in the seat in front of me and looked stiff as a board. He sat with his back very straight and his hands balled into fists resting on his thighs. My heart actually hurt for his discomfort. Poor Dude – he just hasn’t quite reached that point where he’s comfortable in his own skin yet.

He did loosen up a bit at intermission, after he worked up the courage to actually stand up and stretch his legs. He resumed his robot-like behavior though once the show started again.

I think Jazz was fascinated by the entire thing – the theater, which is 100 years old this year, is an elaborate, ornate building that simply oozes charm and the audience’s energetic and appreciative attitude was interesting to absorb. In some respects, I think he was itching to go on stage – not to be one of the actors but to be a part of the band that was playing behind a sheer curtain at the back of the stage.

The play itself was good, though I would have preferred a bit more acting and less music. My three guys all thought it was excellent and liked the top-heavy musical productions. The actor who played Buddy Holly was simply phenomenal. He cut and permed his hair and with the trademark black glasses and wonderful voice, he did indeed look a lot like the original Buddy Holly.

It was only the production’s second night so they had some technical issues, but overall, they all did a wonderful job. It was quite a treat to be transformed to a more innocent age and I think the juxtaposition of that time era when compared to today was a valuable lesson in and of itself.

I honestly think the boys had a good time. We talked about it in the car on the way home and though they only recognized one song, I think it opened up a whole new world that they hadn’t been exposed to before.

This really makes me want to take them to the high school’s spring production if for no other reason than to continue to expose them to the arts.

It’s time like these that I realize I’m dropping the ball on my mom duties by NOT introducing more diverse entertainment opportunities like this.

I found a promotional video of “The Buddy Holly Story” if you would care to watch it. It’s a bit long, but if you will forward to the 2:21 spot, you can watch my nephew talk about his experiences with community theater. (In fact, he’s the blond kid on the left in the thumbnail).

Have you been to a live production lately?
