Photo Story Friday: Being Studious

Oh look! Another wonderful excuse to scan old pictures and bore you to tears!! Yay!

Studying for College, circa 1990

Me, circa 1990. I just started college and I’m studying Algebra. Going to college was a huge culture shock for me. I had been out of high school for a number of years and my scholastic skills were rusty, to say the least.

Actually, I was just happy to BE in college. I waited too long to take my ACT’s and my score wasn’t the best. In fact, I’m pretty sure the school accepted me because I was an older student … or they felt sorry for me because I’m sure I looked like a farm girl straight off the turnip truck.

I believe the plan at the time was to major in finance. I was working at a bank and it just seemed like the natural next step to go to school to study in the field I was currently working in.

It didn’t take long (in fact, I think it was my Calculus class, that I dropped, by the way) for me to figure out that A. I SUCK at math, seriously, I’m SO bad at it that Kevin has forbid me from helping the boys with their math homework because I confuse them so badly and B. I was bored out of my freaking mind. Finance was stale and dry for me.

I then went on to major in journalism and HA! What a joke. I liked it, until I found out that I would actually be required to TALK to people – pfft.

Uh, no.

I ended up majoring Technical (Professional) writing, which was a less lucrative avenue, but one much more suited to me.

This was our apartment and we hadn’t even been married a year. I’m in my jammies (if you look closely, you can see I’m flashing a little bit of flesh) and Kevin was annoying me because I was trying to study and he wanted to take pictures of me.

So, I wouldn’t look at him and tried to ignore him.

He took pictures anyway.

I remember that purple backpack – loved that thing.

I don’t, however, remember that kitchen floor / living room rug combo. Yuk. No wonder we got out of there ASAP. πŸ™‚

Life

A Premature Goodbye

I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I’ve never really experienced grief. I’ve been very, very fortunate – no one close to me has died.

Yet.

So when I read about other bloggers who lose their babies suddenly, and without reason, I’m not sure what to say. I can’t imagine the terrible grief Heather and Mike Spohr are going through. I can’t even fathom losing a child. I’m simply incapable of even drumming up the concept of such a great and tragic loss.

What an absolutely horrific time they must be going through.

If you don’t know, Heather and Mike Spohr’s 17-month old daughter, Madeline Alice, died Tuesday, April 7th. She developed a nasty cough that wouldn’t go away and when they took her to her doctor, her oxygen levels were dangerously low. So low, they had to rush her to the emergency room.

She died only hours later.

Madeline was born 11 weeks early. And because she was so early, she had many, many complications. But Maddie fought, and she overcame many, many obstacles. Her life story is about courage, love and determination … and it will touch your soul.

I knew who Maddie was. I had seen her picture and had read about her struggles. I did not know Maddie, or her parents, personally.

So, given I am not familiar with grief and do not know the Spohr’s personally, I am hesitant to write about their situation.

But I feel compelled, largely due to the fact that I know what it’s like to have a premature baby.

GD was born eight weeks early. And though he didn’t NEARLY have the problems that little Maddie did, he lived under an oxygen tent for the first week of his life because his lungs hadn’t developed. I know what it’s like to be on top of the world one day, only to plunge into the depths of Hades the next day.

There is absolutely no way I can describe the level of emotions that one goes through while watching his/her precious baby fight for his/her life.

I simply can’t. Unless you’ve been there, you just can’t know the heart-gripping fear that your baby won’t survive the night. So, you don’t leave. And you wash your hands so many times to prevent your baby from catching any germs from you that they turn into raw hamburger before your very eyes.

But it doesn’t matter. Because it’s crucial that you get near enough to your baby that you can touch, and talk, to him.

I know. Dear God in heaven, I know.

Learning about Maddie’s death has been hard on me. Reading about her history, and watching her struggle through so many battles just opens up that old wound of when GD was fighting for his life. That emotional roller coaster … it’s just not something you want anyone to ride.

I don’t plan on writing anything more about Maddie – I simply don’t feel like it’s my place to say anything, I feel like I’m encroaching on precious territory, but I would like to show my support by turning my blog purple for a while. If you would also like to go purple, you can find instructions on how to do that here. Or, feel free to use the background graphic you see here on your own blog – you’re more than welcome to it.

In addition, the color code of the above background graphic matches the color in Maddie’s March of Dimes badge you see in my sidebar. The code is: #8C56A4 in case you just wish to make your background purple.

Or, Heather and Mike have asked that in lieu of flowers, you contribute to the March of Dimes in memory of Madeline Alice Spohr.

March for Maddie will be live very soon. You can also follow the site’s progress on Twitter @marchformaddie.

Rest in peace, precious girl.

Thursday Thirteen

Thursday Thirteen – Focus on Positive

tt-numbers

Thirteen things I like about myself.

So often, we concentrate on the things that we don’t like about ourselves. I think it’s time to focus on the positive, don’t you? πŸ™‚

1. I like my … eyes. I think they are a pretty color. (Amber, with a splash of poo. *grin*)

2. I like my … legs. I do a lot of walking and they are pretty toned.

3. I like my … sense of humor. I have a tendency to find the little things funny. (Even when it’s inappropriate – oops, that’s negative!)

4. I like my … life. It’s well rounded, full, rich and I’m very happy. πŸ˜€

5. I like my … car. It’s an ’08 Vibe and drives like a go-cart.

6. I like my … hobbies. I have a love/hate relationship with writing and I love (perhaps too much) the Internet.

7. I like my … new walking sneakers. I wore out my old ones and I purposefully bought a funky-looking pair. (Note the lime green piping – when have I EVER wore lime green anything?!)

New Walking Sneakers
(Ignore the hairy legs. Er, leg.).

8. I like my … boobs. I know, sorry. But they are a nice size and aren’t too terribly droopy – yet. Updated: They drooped. Never mind.

9. I like my … sense of fairness. I’m strict, but I’m also fair. Just ask my children. πŸ™‚

10. I like my … guys. Well actually, I LOVE my guys. Okay fine, I like my guys A WHOLE LOT.

(Okay, I’m starting to search for things … bear with me).

11. I like my … wrinkles. Really, what choice do I have?

12. I like my … feet. Ugh, no I don’t. Scratch that one.

13. I like my … eyes.

Wait, I already said that.

Oh well, I came up with 12 things … close enough.

Now, tell me something that you like about YOU.

Visit the new Thursday 13 hub for more TT participants.

In My Opinion: Take Six

If you played, please insert the DIRECT link to your video response in the Mr. Linky box below. I’ll convert these links tomorrow so Google and Technorati will pick them up.

Welcome to the sixth In My Opinion!! Did you answer the questions? I hope so!

Here are the questions for this week:

1. How many siblings do you have? What is your birth order? Do you agree with the birth order characteristics? Why, or why not?

2. What’s the tastiest meal that you can cook? Do you like to cook? Tell us about your cooking experiences.

3. Has anything bad ever happened to you that turned out to be for the best? Has anything good ever happened to that turned out to be a bad thing in the end? Tell us about it.

And here is my video response to these questions:

I had too much fun taping this and I hope you had fun watching it; I also hope my children/grandchildren treasure it someday. Because really, that’s what In My Opinion is all about – leaving a bit of you behind.

Ready for next week’s questions? Brace yourself …

April 15th Questions

1. Tax Day. Boo! What are your thoughts on taxes? Necessary evil? Too much? Too little? How do you feel about Joe the Plumber’s mission to abolish the IRS? (You can find out more about the Fair Tax proposal here.)

2. Are you more likely to avoid conflict or engage in it head-on? Why?

3. Which do you prefer: the hustle and bustle of city life or the quiet and serenity of the country life? Why?
