Aloha! Kailani is the brain-child behind this fun Friday meme. If you feel inclined to answer my question, please post your answer in the comment section. Sound fun? Of course it does! Want to answer more questions? Hop over to An Island Life and play along!
(Please feel free to answer the question below, even if you’re not playing Aloha Friday!)
My question:
How would you like to spend your elder years?
My answer:
I would love to have a cabin in the mountains, just me and the husband, far enough away that I could feel free and isolated, but close enough that we could go into town to buy groceries or eat dinner. I would love to go for long, cool, bug-free walks and sit on my deck overlooking our magnificent and scenic backyard and simply … write. *sigh* Heaven. π

1. Oh, I can’t wait until I have a few projects that have been hanging over my head DONE.
I’ve been procrastinating on a few things and quite frankly? I don’t know why. I ENJOY what I’m doing, so much so, that I find myself licking my lips in anticipation of WORKING on them. I think maybe I’m dragging them out because I’m savoring every last minute it requires to work on it. Or I’m just trying to sugar coat the fact that I’m procrastinating. π
2. V8 Peach/Mango Fushion is the first thing I see when I open my refrigerator.
Seriously, have ya’ll TRIED this stuff?! It’s dee-lish! AND good for you! What more could you ask for. *grin*
3. I never leave home without chapstick.
HA! You thought I was going to say cell phone, didn’t you. *grin* I abhor my cell phone. Actually, I abhor talking on the phone, period. I much prefer to communicate via email. Why? Because I have time to articulate my thoughts before hitting that send button. When I’m talking on the phone? I always get tongue-tied and sound like a total moron.
Why chapstick? Because I’m self-conscious about my lips. They’re like dry and scaly all the time – gross!
4. If I were a condiment, I would be mustard because I’m spicy like that.
I’m the sort of person people can leave or take. Your sandwich would still taste fine without the mustard, but wouldn’t it taste SO MUCH BETTER with the mustard? π I suppose I’m saying, I’m bland, in a spicy sort of way. Does that make sense? Moving on then …
5. Indecisiveness is really high up on my list of pet peeves.
OMG. Make a decision already. NOTHING drives me crazier than people who him-ha over simple decisions. OR, who can’t make a decision without consulting an army of people. Geez.
6. The last thing I thought of before I went to bed was “I wonder if I could keep my eyes open long enough to squeeze another hour’s worth of work out”.
I’m pretty sure I was asleep before I even finished that thought – so – apparently not. *grin*
Bonus! I also learned that tanning shortly before bed? NOT A GOOD IDEA. I felt like someone had dipped me into a vat of hot sauce and I tossed and turned and kicked off the covers all night.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight Iβm looking forward to enduring a sleepover, tomorrow my plans include stumbling through my chores due to lack of sleep (see sleepover part) and Sunday, I want to continue planning our Disney World vacation for next summer!
My boys think I’m crazy for planning this vacation – because Disney World is for little kids, you see *snort* – but I’m determined to go at least once in my life. Question is, I need to find a really good vacation package. Something that includes the price to get into the parks, a Disney resort of some sort AND our flight down there. If any Disney veterans are reading this, I would TRULY appreciate some links!!

i know someone who’s a disney expert, i’ll send this post to her, maybe she can help you out π
I would like to spend my elder years debt-free and living in a beach house with a lanai to watch the sun set. *ahhhh*
I think I would like to be a ‘snowbird’ – spending the winters somewhere warm and returning here in the summertime. As to the specifics, I have no idea. π
Well, I stopped by to read your Friday Fill-In’s- which are great, as usual! But then I saw your Aloha Friday question and thought ‘I can’t resist that!’
I would like to spend my elder years…..
….living in India or Nepal, high up on a mountain, on a tea plantation. I’d be living in a little wooden house, with the tea-pickers for company. Sometimes I’d help them pick, and I’d learn from them all about the different kinds of tea, and how it’s grown.
And then, other days, I’d teach english to a small group of local children who would come to my little house. They, in turn, would help me perfect my nepalese or erdu, which i spoke as achild but have now forgotten much of.
And at night, I’d sit on the verandah with a cool drink and a book and watch the local birds and wildlife through my binoculars. Bliss!
Traveling for sure. We love to do that now but I would much rather do it for months at a time. I can definitely see us spending 30 days at a time in Jamaica LOL
Yeah, I’ve heard the heat is pretty intense in August. I’d like to go in June, but I don’t think the hubs will be able to swing it with his schedule. July is definitely out and though I’d love to take the kids out of school to go during the fall, I just can’t do it. So that just leaves August.
And I know what you mean about the planning bit. The people I’ve talked have all told me how important that is. That’s a big reason I wanted to start now because I’m hoping I’ll run across a good deal. If you have any websites I should check out, please let me know! I plan on doing some research this weekend and making some sort of budget so we can afford this.
Hey. We live about an hour from Orlando, and I love Disney. If your kids think they’re too old, they’re really wrong. It’s lots and lots of fun for everyone if you plan it well.
I would say the most important thing for you to do is to really spend some time planning the trip. You can literally map where you want to go in each park at which time. Let each kid pick something they want to do in each day. Having a good plan will help.
There are lots of good websites with tips for getting the most for your Disney dollars. They can also give you insider tips on things like which rides are the most popular at what times, etc.
Now, if you’re determined to go in the summer, fine. But don’t be fooled by our kids going to school earlier. Florida folks don’t go in the summer anyway. We wait until the off season when the tickets are cheaper. If your kids get a fall break, that might be better. It’s going to be REALLY hot in August.
Email me if I can get any information for you.
watching my flowers bloom and my grandchildren grow
Thanks so much for the tips, Betsy!! I bought the Unofficial Guide to Disney World and they did mention the overcrowded factor. And we plan on following their tips to (hopefully) avoid the biggest crowds.
We’re also planning on going in late August. Florida kids start back to school earlier than we do and we’re hoping that will cut down on people, somewhat.
And yes, I’m already mentally preparing myself for the major moolah – another huge thing I have to sell the husband on.
But hey, we’ll probably never get to go again so … now or never! π
Hey Karen!
Retirement: The plan was for the husband & self to cash out, buy an RV & a jeep & travel across the country – now w/ economy & gas… we’ll have to see.
Disney: This is the reason I mandated that we would begin camping. But, if you are compelled to go…. I’d recommend spending a few nights @ Disney to explore Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Downtowm Disney, Typhoon Lagoon & Blizzard beach. And there’s no alcohol @ Magic Kingdom – so don’t even bother ordering a glass of wine w/ your lunch. I’ve stayed @ Animal Kingdom Lodge, which was a crowded nut-house… but there are numerous Disney Hotels, all with shuttle service to & between the parks. There’s even a Disney Campground resort which I hear is excellent. After Disney, head over to Universal / Islands of Adventure for a few days…I’ve stayed @ Royal Pacific which was nice, but there are at least two other good hotels right on site – all within 5 min. walk to parks – and a promanade called City Walk with overpriced, mediocre shops, restaurants & entertainment. I much prefer this area because when I tire of the theme parks (immediately after lunch), I can walk back to the hotel to relax & read by the pool. I think they have a Wet & Wild water park there, too. To complete your tour or Orlando theme parks, take a cab over to Seaworld for a day – they’re open at night in the summer, too – with special shows. Be forewarned – the parks are very crowded in June right through 4th of July. (But they all have awesome fireworks for the 4th). And be prepared to spend major $$$. Oh – and get yourselves some ponchos because it’s going to rain every afternoon @ 3:00.
the whole cabin thing sounds nice. we’ve aleady talked about where we would want said cabin.
the other thing we want to do is travel. we think that looks like driving around in an rv and visting every inch of the u.s. but with gas prices being what they are, that may be out of the question by the time we’re ready to do it. the other thought was to volunteer to be campground hosts. that would mean spending a couple of months in one place, which also sounds nice.
I would love to spend my elder years retired (something that seems like it may be impossible given the economy). Hopefully my husband and I can have a place c.lose to our boys who will likely have families of their own. I also hope to be able to travel to distant lands and see more of the world.
Hi Karen,
Let’s see, gee, I gotta go with your scenario. Love it!
Since I’m dreaming of the future, (which my be in the next few years) I would add a beach house because mu husband loves the beach. (I do to but give me a lake in the mountains any day) Add a bit of traveling and there you have it!
One thing I want to do a lot when I’m older is travel – I suppose I want to travel now, too, but I mean really just hopping in the car and going, when we have fewer responsibilites, kids out of the nest, bills paid, etc. My grandmother does this all the time and I really admire how she can just get up and drive to North Carolina or randomly decide to fly to Ireland (I’m sure she plans way more than I realize, but the point is she DOES it!).
I’d also really like to run a small cafe bakery, but I don’t want any involvement in the true business aspect, I just want to RUN it on my own terms…
I would like to live in a nice bungalow style house with a lovely view of the mountain. I would like to live close to my family and enjoy regular Sunday lunch with them.
