Kitchen Saga

Kitchen Saga: Slowly Getting Back to Normal

You wouldn’t think that simply BEING at home and coordinating contractors would be so stressful …

…but I’m here to tell you, it IS. I’m a little disappointed in myself, if you want the truth. This whole kitchen remodel has stressed me out so much that I’ve literally been crashing on the couch at 8:00 p.m. and I only rouse myself long enough to make sure the boys are going to bed and I’ve brushed my teeth.

This remodeling stuff is for the birds. I can’t imagine building a whole house!

On second thought, maybe it’s easier when you build a house: you get to leave and come back to see results. When you remodel, you have to live (i.e. shuffle things around and step over obstacles) among the mess and see every single thing that happens every single moment that it happens. When you remodel, you get to hear the contractors curse under their breath when something doesn’t quite work out like it’s supposed to and then moments later they clear their throat and call you into the room to show you and ask for an alternate plan.

And that’s is the part that I hate the most – the questions. Kevin has to go to work, so I’m here, alone, with the contractors and their blasted questions. I feel like such a helpless female whenever they ask me questions I don’t have answers to.

“Hang on,” I say, “let me call my husband.”

I feel like such a Victorian when that happens.

“Help me! I’m a weak female who can’t think for herself!”

GRR.

So to over compensate, I run every possible scenario past Kevin before he leaves for work. I know he’s gotten a bit impatient with me these past weeks, but seriously, it’s no fun to feel like an idiot. (You’d think I’d be USED to that feeling by now).

Anyway, all this to say …. I was simply too stressed, distracted and tired to write anything about yesterday.

AND to say …

WE HAVE CABINETS and this PROJECT IS ALMOST DONE.

Aren’t you glad?! I’m sure you’re sick of hearing about it, I’m certainly sick of writing about it.

The cabinet guy came over early Saturday and finished the job. After many adjustments and tweaks, he finally finished. It only took him three days (?), but I have to say, we couldn’t be MORE pleased with the results.

Remember the crooked floor issue? Well, he manipulated the cabinets so that they lined up with the grout line and anyone walking into the room would never know our kitchen is built like a fun house room. Everything looks fantastic.

I’ll take you on a tour:

This is the view looking in from the dining room:

New Cabinets

And a closer look:

New Cabinets

Our cute little glass doors on either side of the sink:

New Cabinets

The cabinet where our sink will go – looks pretty normal and blah, right?

New Cabinets

Ah, but wait! It actually opens up into a wedge drawer! This is where we’ll keep our sponges and anything else we usually have lying around the sink.

New Cabinets

We opted not to put knobs on this because even though it’s a cool little compartment, we didn’t want to draw attention to the fact that it’s a cool little compartment, you know? (Huh?)

Karen, what is that overly large drawer for?

New Cabinets

Ah, I’m glad you asked. It’s where our …

New Cabinets

… trash goes!! Yay! No more unsightly trash can out in the middle of the floor for visitors to see and smell! (Well, see. I’m sure our trash will STILL stink after this. *ba-da-bum*)

Seriously, I keep opening this drawer up to admire our dual trash bins. And I haven’t allowed anyone to use it yet because HEY, the newness needs to wear off first, thank you very much. (Kevin just rolls his eyes at me).

Here are the cabinets on the range side:

New Cabinets

There aren’t any fun little drawer gadgets on this side – it’s pretty straight forward.

This is what you see when you enter the kitchen via the family room:

New Cabinets

Note the AWESOME bookcase!!

Bookcase

See those yummy columns? Would you believe those columns were the most expensive “extra” thing we ordered? (Yes, even more expensive than the glass doors). Talk about insane. BUT, we will never do this again and you know? If it’s what you want, it’s what you want. We don’t want to look back on this project in our old age and say, “You know, we should have just splurged and bought the dang columns.”

Now? No regrets. πŸ™‚

I can’t wait to put my NEW cookbooks on there. (And yes, I will have to buy some decent cookbooks because mine are seriously nasty, stained and literally coming apart).

Here’s a shot of the kitchen from the other side of the room:

New Cabinets

See that big door in the lower right-hand corner? That’s where our kitchen computer goes.

New Cabinets

Because YES FOLKS. We are such uber geeks that we planned a space specifically for our kitchen computer. (And Kevin has already set it up using an unused shelf to put his monitor on).

I think our cabinet guy was amused with our computer space.

And there you have it. Our new, customized kitchen and I couldn’t love it more. I mean, I truly, TRULY love it. I walk in our new kitchen and simply stop to admire.

“I can’t believe this is my kitchen.”

I am proud of it. I am no longer ashamed of it. We’ve talked about doing this project for 18 long years and now, it’s finally happened.

Please allow me this moment to appreciate it.

We went to Lowe’s on Sunday to buy some paper to line our drawers. I don’t want the moisture from our dishes to warp our wood. In the past, I’ve just haphazardedly thrown some paper in there and it’s looked like crap. Kevin actually got his leveler tool out and cut the paper into exact measurements (please allow our anal-ness).

We went over to Kevin’s parents’ house Sunday to pick up the washer and dryer. They were Nanny’s (Kevin’s grandmother’s) and quite new. (Nanny passed away last summer). I had painted the portion of the wall where the washer and dryer were going to go and with the help of Dude, the guys got them back into place so I was able to catch up on laundry.

In the meantime, the Boys / Girls Club came by and picked up our old washer and dryer and range. Kevin had cleaned them up and they all still worked, so they were thrilled to have them.

The plumber and the appliance guys came out yesterday. The plumber ran a line to the back of our fridge so we could use the ice machine / water spigot on the front of the fridge. The appliance guys finished installing the appliances about 4:00 p.m.

I felt actual physical pain when I heard them drilling into our brand new cabinets in order to secure the dishwasher.

New Cabinets w/ Appliances

They had to take the front door off in order to get the fridge into the house. It wouldn’t fit through the garage entrance. It didn’t dawn on us, until Sunday night, that our fridge MIGHT be a bit too big to go into the space allotted.

So, we hurriedly went out and measured – we had 1/2 an inch clearance! HA! I don’t know why it never dawned on either of us to make sure our fridge was going to fit before we bought it. We were excited I guess.

But it all worked out and everything is now in place. We can’t use the dishwasher yet, of course, until we reinstall the sink, but everything else is functional.

New Cabinets w/ Appliances

We’re going to hold off putting our old counter tops back in place and reinstalling our old sink until after the counter top guys come out and measure for the template. They haven’t called us yet (we’re following up on that today), but after they do their thing, we’ll be able to get our kitchen back into semi-normal. We don’t expect the counter tops to arrive for at least a month (Lowe’s warned us that they take the longest).

I transferred everything from the old fridge to the new fridge last night so now we don’t have to make a trip out to the garage to get our milk.

We were too tired to cook at home last night, but tonight, I plan on cooking breakfast. I can’t wait to use the new range. (Though I need to read the manual because it’s a lot more fancy than our other one was).

And that brings you guys up-to-date. Thanks for indulging me while I rattle on about our remodel. I wanted to make sure I documented the whole long process and though we’re not through yet, the bulk of the work, and inconvenience, is over.

Everything looks great and we couldn’t be happier. Now we get to “tweak” it and make it look pretty.

I think I’m looking forward to that part the most. πŸ™‚

Can We Talk?

My Twitter Account is Worth …

… well, nothing really.

$300

Created by WhatsMyTwitterAccountWorth.com

But hey man, $300 bucks is $300 bucks, you know? I’ll take it!

Do you Twitter? I do. A lot. Too much, actually. In fact, I often find myself saying SO much about what’s going on with me that writing a blog post after spewing my nonsense on Twitter is rather redundant.

So, I don’t post on my blog.

And I start feeling guilty.

Because this blog o’ mine is my journal – about my life, my thoughts, the funny, off-the-wall humor I find on the Internet. It’s about me – as boring as that sounds (and probably reads).

But Twitter — is a platform that was MADE for me, I think. I like that I only have 140 characters to verbalize my thoughts/feelings. I like that it forces me to be concise, that it forces me to carefully choose my words and the challenge it presents in putting both my statement and my humor out there at the same time. It’s the perfect platform for people who enjoy spewing one-liners.

Like me.

As you all know, I’m rather, erhm, long winded on this blog, so having to stick to that word restriction is so much fun for me.

But am I doing it right? Am I utilizing Twitter to it’s full potential? Is there even a right or wrong way to USE Twitter?

Some people think so.

I see Twitter as a huge party. Everyone is talking at once and though at first, it sounds confusing, there is a certain pattern that emerges if you take a moment to listen.

Or read, as the case may be.

There are tons of conversations going on and I love the fact that Twitter gives you the opportunity to eavesdrop on these conversations and then join them, if one is so inclined. I love the fact that there is SO MUCH DIVERSITY on Twitter – one tweet might be about politics, another about what’s for dinner that evening, another about parenting advice, another about a funny event, another showing a picture of that person’s activities … I love the flurry of activity – it’s hard to get bored on Twitter.

I find it exhilarating that I can be annoyed and/or fired up about a political issue in one tweet and in the very next tweet, talk about something totally unrelated and off-the-wall. I love the see-saw of emotions that accompany each tweet and though it’s exhausting, it’s an adrenaline rush at times (at times).

I tweet because it amuses me. I tweet to connect with people. I tweet to promote my book store. I tweet because it gives me a voice and it’s okay if no one is listening.

The fact that my words are out there, somewhere, floating around are somehow enough for me.

Do you use Twitter? Why or why not? What do you “get” out of Twitter?

Kitchen Saga: And On the Sixth Day, They Had Cabinets

Ladies and gentlemen,

Bookcase

we have cabinets!!

I’ll blog more about it on Monday. Now? I have to paint and sort through boxes of kitchen junk because there is NO WAY I’m going to allow anything gross and/or ancient back into my new, CLEAN kitchen.

(I have to document every precious moment of this because this will be the cleanest my kitchen will EVER be from this point on, let me assure you.)

Life-condensed

Jazz it Up

(Update from last post: The Internet came back on when I got home from the library – naturally. And it was indeed our service provider. But I can’t complain, because they rarely have problems and it was only down for a few hours so …. life goes on).

I had to get up at 6:00 this morning.

On a Saturday.

While all of my guys got to sleep in.

But I wasn’t bitter because it was for a good cause. Jazz had his first jazz performance of the year today.

Kevin couldn’t go with me, he had to stay at the house to let the cabinet guy in, so it was just me and Jazz. (Dude didn’t go because HELLO, it’s Saturday – nothing short of an earthquake could get that boy out of bed before 10:00 on the weekend).

Jazz Festival - MSU - 2-27-10

It went well. I was a bit annoyed that their conductor had the kids begin before they were even settled, but when you’re on a timetable, you have to make do.

They played three songs. The first one sounded a bit sluggish (probably due to the fact that they were rushed), the second song sounded better and the third song made up for the first. I thought they sounded great and as usual, I was bursting with pride.

I asked Jazz how he thought he did after the performance and he had to be extra hard on himself, of course. He always is after a performance. He was pretty happy with nearly everything, except for the last song when the trumpets came in late (like I would know, but this is what he said). He was also upset because his belt buckle put a few more scratches in his saxophone bell, but you know, we didn’t buy him that black Cannonball so he could look at it, we bought it for him to enjoy and that’s what I told him. This is a magical time period for him and I want him to enjoy every minute of it.

I took a video, of course. I’ll post that whenever I get it online.

He’s got a big festival in Pittsburgh Kansas next weekend. We won’t be going to that but he’s really looking forward to it. He went with his 8th grade class last year and said it was a blast. He really loves jazz and in fact told me today that out of all the band activities that he’s involved with, jazz is his absolute favorite.

It really warms my heart that he has a passion for music and I thoroughly enjoy listening to him play. I hope he continues to pursue music after high school.

Life

It’s Been One of Those Mornings

And when it rains, it pours.

Good grief, this morning has been hectic.

I sign on, go through my morning routine, and then the hounds of hell are released. I can’t get back on the Internet.

Swell. I have clients waiting on me.

So, in between making lunches for the boys, I’m troubleshooting our connection.

Nothing.

I unplug everything, finish making lunches, plug everything back in … nothing.

I plea with Kevin to please FIX IT (because he’s a super whiz and is the best problem solver, EVER), and then leave to take the kids to school.

As I’m walking out of the door, I yell over my shoulder, “If you can’t fix it, don’t stress. I’ll just go to my backup plan!”

My backup plan being the library Internet connection.

I get back from dropping the kids off, still no Internet.

I so don’t have time for this because I’ve got guys coming over to fix my kitchen and I still haven’t taken a shower.

So, I whip through my shower (in record time, I might add) and start making backups of files so I can transfer them to my laptop; I will need to use the Internet connection at the library to upload some client files.

*insert sound of needle ripping across a record here*

But wait. I don’t have Dreamweaver (my website software) loaded onto my laptop.

So, in between putting my war paint on (i.e. makeup), I load Dreamweaver on my laptop.

With each stroke of the mascara wand, I’m clicking buttons and installing files because I NEED to get these files uploaded before my clients get cranky.

I’m expecting the cabinet guy to show up and our new appliances are supposed to be delivered between 8:00 a.m. and noon. I figured, I have time to run up to the library (about two miles from my house), upload my files and race back home before the guys call.

I have a plan, everything is cool.

*takes a deep breath*

I have just finished blow drying my hair when the phone rings, only it’s not who I think it is and glancing at the clock, it’s 8:45 a.m. There is no way I’m going to make it to the library and back before the cabinet guy is scheduled to come (and he’s always on time). So, I’ll just run up to the library after he gets here.

The phone rings again.

It’s the appliance guys, they’re on their way.

The phone rings two minutes later, it’s the cabinet guy, he’s also on his way.

Swell.

I pack up my laptop and am zipping up the backpack when the appliance guys pull up. They’re unloading our goodies when the cabinet guy pulls up.

I’m checking to make sure everything is delivered (four pieces) and signing my life away when they ask me what sort of cord we’ll need for our range.

*crickets*

As usual, I’m clueless and after the guys ask me how old our house is (40 years old), they give me a cord the approximate thickness of a Boa Constrictor and after “have a nice day!” they take off.

(They were actually very nice).

Okay. They’re gone and I only have the cabinet guy to deal with.

(Who’s also very nice).

He grins at me. I grin back and then without a word, we go our separate ways.

I make sure our valuables are hidden (what valuables – I’m totally exaggerating here), tell the cabinet guy I have an errand to run, and here I am, at the library, furiously typing out this entry because I have no idea when our home Internet connection will return.

(Kevin called and said his boss, who also uses the same service that we do, was also having problems, so now I’m thinking it’s not us, but our service. So, I thought I would call our service to see what the heck is going on but since I didn’t have the number, Kevin gave it to me. Only, it was the wrong number, it was the number of our insurance company – that doesn’t help me! So I still need to call them when I get back home).

*takes another deep breath*

I get to the library and am unpacking my laptop when I realize, I forgot to pack the stupid power cord. So, I hurriedly uploaded the files I needed to upload (no grumpy emails – YAY!) and now, I’m 100% focused on writing this out and publishing before my pitiful battery, which was never that great to begin with, conks out on me and you’re left reading half a sente

A Visual Representation of My Thoughts on the Obama Health Care Summit

This is what I thought of Obama’s health care “summit” (i.e. – let’s try and convince the American people that it’s really the REPUBLICANS who are the bad guys and OH, don’t you dare disagree with my ideas or I will talk over you and act super arrogant because I’m the PRESIDENT and shut up, I’m talking) yesterday.
