Life

At this Moment …

Our current weather situation is:

Radar - 1/27

We’re in Springfield Missouri, in case you didn’t know that.

And as you can see, we’re buried under that big pink blob. And it looks bad.

Only, it’s really not that bad. In this case, it looks worse than it really is. We did get some sleet last night, about 1/2 inch, and school was canceled today as a result of slick roads, but the accumulation is more of a crunchy consistency at this point, sort of like walking on pebbles, than anything else.

But it’s a solid mass of pebbles. I just tried to scoop some up to take a picture of it in the palm of my hand, but I couldn’t do it. In fact, the only thing I could do was scratch the surface – it’s solid and it’s slick. Since we’re not supposed to get above freezing today, I’m predicting school will be canceled tomorrow as well.

This is what my world looks like right now, right this minute as seen from my back door:

Icy Wonderland

When I was standing outside to take this picture, I could hear the dreaded soft tinkling of ice falling – it’s sleeting right now. There’s nothing quite like that tinkle sound as the ice falls through the tree branches and embeds itself into the earth. It’s a flat pinging sound and Missourians are all too familiar with that sound. It’s a hard, solid sleeting though as opposed to a more wet consistency and it’s not really sticking to the trees but falling more like, well, pebbles.

This is typical winter weather for us. We don’t get snow very often, but we do get ice. Which is much worse because it’s hazardous to drive on, and heavy enough to snap tree limbs and cut power lines. We’ve now had an ice storm for the past three years – 2007 was the worst (it shut our city down for two solid weeks), last year we had one in February that lasted about a week, and now this year. It looks like it might not stick around very long though because we’re supposed to start warming back up on Thursday.

I Twittered about trying to locate our birth certificates yesterday. I went up to the bank to check our safety deposit box and I found all of the guys’ certificates, but mine wasn’t in there. I seem to have a problem with keeping track of my birth certificate, for some reason. I’ve already requested two copies.

However, the husband suggested I check one place at home and I did find it, so now our next step is to take our paperwork up to the post office and start the ball rolling on our passports.

Of course, that will have to wait until after this ice melts. And a day the boys get out of school early because the office is only accepting applications until 4:15 and that doesn’t give us a lot of time after school to drive across town.

****

I’m keeping a record of everything I eat. Not for dietary purposes but because my digestive problem has gotten out of control. Apparently, I’m eating gassy foods, which is not helping my problem.

I’m keeping this record for two reasons: 1. to pinpoint exactly what types of foods are giving me problems and 2. IF it gets to the point where I have to go to the doctor, it will expedite the process because they will ask me to keep a record anyway.

I’m also going to try Chamomile tea, something called Charcocaps (I love their little bloated cartoon characters, that’s me, exactly) and do a better job of taking Lactaid with my dairy intake.

I know some of you are shaking your heads and saying, GO TO A DOCTOR ALREADY, but I just can’t do that until I’ve exhausted all of my possibilities.

One – because I’m stubborn like that.

Two – because I’m honestly not sure if a doctor is what I need at this point (I’m getting older, my body is changing *ahem* and I just need to learn to roll with it).

Three – because I don’t want to spend an insane amount of money for them to tell me to do what I’m trying now

Four – because this way I can say I’ve already TRIED all of these options before they tell me to, therefore speeding up the process

Five – I’m not the sort of person who turns to a doctor before exhausting all of my personal options first.

I promise, if I feel like I’ve exhausted all of my possibilities, THEN I will go to a doctor. Until then … I’m gritting my teeth, handling the discomfort and trudging forward.

Speaking of health issues, my husband sent me a link to this article yesterday:

Obesity ‘Virus’ Spreads Like Common Cold, Scientists Say

Obesity can be “caught” as easily as a common cold from other people’s coughs, sneezes and dirty hands, scientists said Monday.

The condition has been linked to a highly-infectious virus which causes sniffles and sore throats.

Nikhil Dhurandhar, an associate professor at The Pennington Biomedical Research Center, in Baton Rouge, La., said the virus, known as AD-36, infects the lungs then whisks around the body, forcing fat cells to multiply and also causing sore throats.

“When this virus goes to fat tissue it replicates, making more copies of itself and in the process increases the number of new fat cells, which may explain why the fat tissue expands and why people get fat when they are infected with this virus,” Dhurandhar said.

You. Have. Got. To. Be. Kidding. Me.

I think this is just an excuse to classify obesity as a disease so people can once again not take responsibility for their personal choices.

This just STEAMS my broccoli.

Which is ANOTHER food I can’t eat because it gives me problems, thank you very much.

Yes, I’m cranky because I’m hungry and gassy. Humpf.

Weekend Top 5: Cruisin’ Along

weekendtopfive

Weekend Top 5 is hosted by Kristi at The Wheelz are Rolling

number We had a really busy weekend, where do I start … ?

It all began with the Bacon Cheeseburger Toaster from Sonic Drive-In. In order to fully appreciate what I’m saying here, you really must click on that link.

Did you see the size of that thing?! I ate that puppy, nearly all of it (I left some of the toast, but the meat and trimmings? Gone).

I made a deal with myself: after I ate that sandwich, I would then start the summer stretch, which is what I call the time period between now and the moment I put on summer clothing.

It’s time to get back into shape. And now that we’re going on our cruise (more on that in a moment), I really MUST do something about this flab. It’s all about the vacation pictures my friends, let me tell you. Because I never really realize how bad I look until we examine the vacation pictures and I notice the gut, or the flabby arms or geez, could I WEAR anything more ugly?? And I don’t want to be immortalized like that so …

Here’s my plan: From now until we go on our cruise, I will walk four times a week. I will do Turbo Jam three times a week. I will not eat junk food, of any kind, except once a week (because if I cut them out entirely I’ll crave them so bad that I’ll binge and eat a whole bag of candy before I’ve come to my senses). I plan on eating an apple or yogurt at around 11ish (no food before then, because truly, I’m never hungry until that time), eat a late lunch, eat a small salad before dinner and then eat only half of my normal portion for dinner.

And of course, drink plenty of water. I plan on eating lots of tuna, whole grains, low-fat popcorn, animal crackers, and cheese sticks. Anything that will fill me up but doesn’t have a lot of calories.

It’s time to get back on the fitness wagon once again. I’m gonna look HOT in this summer’s vacation pictures.

number4 If you didn’t catch it on Twitter – we booked the cruise. It’s a done deal.

The husband and I spent close to an hour running totals and different scenarios through the American Airline website until we finally settled on a cruise.

We’re sailing to the Caribbean. Here’s our route:

Countries to Visit

We’ll be leaving the Port of Miami and sailing to Grand Cayman Islands, Isla Roatan off the coast of Honduras, Belize, and Cozumel, Mexico. I’m really looking forward to going to Cozumel because that’s where we honeymooned and I’m looking forward to going back to see how it changed and to show the boys where their parents’ lives really began.

The first and last day we’ll be at sea, which we really like because it will give us time to sort of come down from our beach high.

Our ship is the Carnival Valor:

Sailing on Valor

After deciding on our cruise, we nearly booked it online but we hesitated because we weren’t sure how big the rooms were and if they would accommodate four people. And we really thought the boys would be more comfortable in their own room but we didn’t see that sort of option online, so we called Carnival.

And I’m glad we did because the guy ended up booking us two rooms, side-by-side, and I’m ecstatic because now we won’t be falling all over each other. It cost a few extra hundred dollars, but we figured it’ll be worth the money to have our space.

We also ended up buying the insurance, which I was surprised the husband agreed to – he doesn’t normally buy into that sort of thing, but we did this time in case we have to cancel for some reason or something comes up and we can’t go, or we have a medical situation on board (like we get sea sick, which will likely happen with me and GD), or our baggage is lost, etc.

The Carnival guy couldn’t book our flight, so after we finally got off the phone with him, we went back to AA.com and looked at flights. Again, we ran several scenarios through the calculator but in the end, we decided to drive to St. Louis and take a non-stop flight out of St. Louis and into Miami the night before we are scheduled to sail. We’ll spend the night in Miami (because it will stress me out if we fly ON the day we go to sea and there’s some delay and we don’t get there in time to go through the RIGOROUS customs routine, more on that in a minute).

We’ll do the whole trip in reverse when we get back. We decided to fly from St. Louis instead of Springfield because to fly from Springfield would have cost us an additional $1,800. ZOINK! So we figured even with the cost of the gas to drive up there and the parking lot fee to park it for a week AND the cost of the hotel in Miami, we were still coming out ahead in the end.

Eighteen hundred EXTRA dollars to fly out of Springfield! Isn’t that insane!?

We’re not able to cash in any of our Advantage points BUT, we’re getting quite a few points from the cruise and charging our trip is earning us more points so next year we should have enough Advantage points to fly all four of us somewhere we wouldn’t normally go because the flight would cost too much if we had to pay full price.

We’ve already been throwing some places around *cough-Hawaii-cough*

number3 Carnival told us we would have to have passports. Apparently, beginning June 1, 2009, the government is demanding a passport from all US citizens on this type of trip now. When the husband and I took our last cruise, in 2000, all we had to show was our birth certificates and our driver’s licenses, but now, that won’t fly – or sail, as the case may be. 🙂

But we understand. Things are different now and really, we’re certainly proud to prove that we’re Americans so it’s really not a big deal …

Only it is. In order to get a passport we have to:

1. Get passport pictures taken. (Which cost $13.00 per person! ZOINK!)
2. Fill out applications online, but not sign them, and print them off.
3. Make an appt. with our main postal office to submit the applications.
4. Show our birth certificates and a picture ID, along with our applications and passport pictures.
5. Pay $45 per person to get our passport cards, ouch. (The books are like, over $100!!)
6. Wait 8+ weeks to get them back. (So if you’re planning anything like this, you might plan WELL in advance!!

So now I’m sweating, do I even HAVE our birth certificates? I plan on making a trip to our safety deposit box after I publish this to check. I’m thinking mine might not be in there, and if it’s not, then I’ll have to get a copy, which takes even more time … *breaks into a cold sweat*

Here’s our passport pictures. The lady told us we couldn’t smile which is the reason we all look so pissed off. Or like a serial killing Brady Bunch family. (I don’t know why mine turned out so much lighter than the guys – I can’t even look good for a lousy passport picture – *sigh*)

Passport Photos

Not smiling is harder than it looks! I kept giggling and the poor girl taking my picture had to take several shots before this one. The boys? Had no trouble not smiling. 🙂

number2 The husband dragged me out shopping Saturday. *shudder* We had to go out anyway to get our grocery shopping done, but while we were out, he really wanted to try and find himself a leather jacket. And being the end of the season he figured we would find a good deal.

Boy howdy, did we find a good deal:

Bad Boys

See these bad boys? The coats, not the boys, though they’re bad, too. *grin* Guess how much we paid for those two coats. No really, guess.

Give up?

One hundred dollars. For both. It was a buy one, get one free deal and though we only went in to buy the husband a jacket, HELLO?! we couldn’t pass up the chance to buy a real leather coat for $50.00! These coats are regular … are you ready for this?

These coats are regular $225.00!!!!! I nearly fainted when the sales girl rang us up and the husband was so excited about not only the coat, but the great deal, that he was actually shaking when we left the store.

I think I’m beginning to understand the whole shopping appeal thing. *grin*

number1 One more thing and then I’ll shut up …

I finally figured out how to text on my phone. I know. I’m a major dork but I just never took the time to really learn it before. But now, I know. And not only do I know how to text on my phone, I now know how to text to Twitter via my phone. So this means, I can take ya’ll with me during the day!

Aren’t you excited!?

Teaching: Jesus is God’s Right-Hand Man

Every Sunday I provide videos and valuable links to the Truth or Tradition teachings. We’ve been following the Truth or Tradition teachings for many years now and they have truly blessed our family. We have found peace and happiness through our beliefs and we walk confidently for God. My hope, by passing on this information to you, is that what you find here, or on the Truth or Tradition website, will guide you to a better, more blessed and abundant life.

If you would like to read my views on religion and how we got started with the ministry, you can read this.

Let’s get started:

Isaiah 53:1 (NIV)
Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD [Yahweh] been revealed?

The above verse is set amidst the classic Messianic section of Isaiah 52:13-53:12, which graphically depicts the suffering (the “passion”) that Jesus would have to endure in order to fulfill his mission as the Redeemer of mankind. His being figuratively referred to as the “arm of the Lord” is most significant.

God is spirit (John 4:24), and therefore has no arms, literally speaking. Being invisible, God needed a human representative who could, if he would, conduct his life so as to make Him known to a world of people oriented to what they could see, hear, smell, taste, or touch. We now know that Jesus of Nazareth was that man.

Chapter 12 of our book, One God & One Lord is titled “God’s Namesake in Action”. It shows how Jesus is named after his Father, and how, in his ministry on earth among mankind, much of what Jesus did re-presented what God had done for His people in the Old Testament as “the LORD who provides,” “the LORD who heals,” etc. It also shows that the work Jesus did on earth was a “preview of coming attractions,” that is, a taste of what he will do as “King” in the future Millennial Kingdom.

It is now in his exalted and expanded ministry to Christians as “Lord” and “Head of the Body, the Church,” that Jesus is functioning as God’s “right hand man” in a far greater capacity than he did when he was on earth. Each member of the Body of Christ can count on the Lord Jesus doing for him what he did when he walked the earth.

Let us consider that relatively brief period of time when Jesus carried out the job God set before him as the Redeemer of mankind. As the Son of God, “The Man” who was to perfectly re-present his heavenly Father to a dying world, Jesus was busy. He had places to go and people to see. He had much work to do, and not much time to do it. In that vein, the following verse is pertinent:

John 5:17
Jesus said to them [the Jews who were persecuting him], “My Father is always at work [un]to this very day, and I, too, am working.”

Jesus was saying that the work God had done from Genesis until that time was to make it possible for him to be born and have the opportunity to carry out his ministry as the Savior of man—and that now it was his turn to work. What “work” had Jesus just done? He had healed a lame man, like God healed people in the Old Testament.

It is most significant that the Old Testament was written primarily for Jesus. Yes, because Genesis through Malachi was his “ID,” if you will, telling him who he was (the promised “seed of the woman,” etc). It was also the “blueprint” for his life—and his gruesome death. And it was also his motivation to go all the way through the Cross, because in reading about many men and women who gave their lives for their belief in his coming as the Messiah, he became determined not to let them down.

The Old Testament was also his “coupon” for the kingship of the world that would be his if he fulfilled his mission. That was “the joy set before him” that enabled him to “endure the Cross.” So when you read the Old Testament, ask yourself what Jesus could have learned from what you are reading.

Can We Talk?

The President’s First Week in Office

One thing I really like about this incoming administration? Their willingness to communicate with us.

President Obama lays out the key priorities. He goes into detail, noting that the plan will update our electric grid by laying more than 3,000 miles of transmission lines; weatherize 2.5 million homes; protect health insurance for more than 8 million Americans in danger of losing their coverage; secure 90 major ports; renovate 10,000 schools; and triple the number of science fellowships.

This was my favorite part of his speech:

I know that some are skeptical about the size and scale of this recovery plan. I understand that skepticism, which is why this recovery plan must and will include unprecedented measures that will allow the American people to hold my Administration accountable for these results. We won’t just throw money at our problems – we’ll invest in what works. Instead of politicians doling out money behind a veil of secrecy, decisions about where we invest will be made public, and informed by independent experts whenever possible. We’ll launch an unprecedented effort to root out waste, inefficiency, and unnecessary spending in our government, and every American will be able to see how and where we spend taxpayer dollars by going to a new website called recovery.gov.

I’m ABSOLUTELY in favor of keeping track of where our money goes and weeding out unnecessary spending. (Bravo on the wage freeze in Washington! They all make too money, in my opinion).

Keep up the good work, President Obama. So far so good in my book.

Smile! It’s Saturday!

Here’s another fun meme to coax a smile out of you. Smiley Saturday is brought to you by Lightening Online.

I love comics. They never fail to make me smile. And since I have like a gazillion saved in a folder, this is a perfect opportunity to start sharing them with you.

Here’s one …

Monsters Under the Bed

So tell me, do your kids have monsters under their beds?

My boys were never afraid of anything under their beds, but to this day, they are both still a little creeped out by their closets. In fact, I have to close their closet doors every night before bedtime and every morning, I find them both open!

And my boys are 16 and 14! LOL
