Blog-a-thon ’08: Support CafePress Military Designs

Want to know what’s going on? Visit this page

Another way you can help Support the Troops is by purchasing something from our military families’ CafePress stores.

In fact, when I was browsing all of the stores, looking for something to offer as a prize (I settled on the “Deployment Thoughts” journal – WHICH you have a chance of winning in the next few hours), I had a hard time narrowing it down to just one thing because there was a lot of COOL stuff!!

For example:

CafePress 1

CafePress 2

Aren’t these great?! You can find these designs, and SO MUCH MORE.

If you don’t want to buy them for yourself, maybe you could consider giving them as gifts, or giveaways, on your own blog. Every little bit helps!

Blog-a-thon ’08: Blue Star Mothers

Want to know what’s going on? Visit this page

The Blue Star Mothers

On January 22, 1942 the Flint News Advertiser printed a coupon asking Mothers of serviceman to return the coupon after filling it out. The following February 1st 300 mothers met in the Durant Hotel, in Flint Michigan. Captain George H. Maines, who had conceived the idea for this group, acted as the chair of this first meeting. It was decided that after receiving 1000 responses from the ad to form a permanent organization.

On February 6th the organization was reported on Congressional record. Chapters then formed in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, Oregon, California, Iowa and Washington. In June of 1960 the organization was chartered by congress.

Mothers volunteered throughout the tough times of World War II. They worked in hospitals, train stations, packed care packages for soldiers and were an working part of homeland security during times our time of war. The organization waned in size over the years but has held together by mothers showing pride in both their children and country. In recent times we have began to grow in strength. Being attacked on our own soil has once again started mothers hanging flags in their windows at home proclaiming pride in the fact that we have children protecting our freedom during at time of war
Our organization not only provides support for active duty service personnel, promotes patriotism, assists Veterans organizations, and are available to assist in homeland volunteer efforts to help our country remain strong.

I’m going to take a break from the writing for a few hours and recharge my creative batteries. I’ve written 4,463 words in the past twelve hours (that’s nearly 13 pages!!) and I’m going cross-eyed. I’ll resume the story later. Stay tuned!

Welcome Home

β€œYou’re what?!” Alecia couldn’t believe her ears. β€œYou’re not seriously going to slap that on the guy, after all this time? After all he’s been through?”

β€œI’ve waited long enough,” Jessie said in a hard, even tone of voice. β€œI have to move on. We don’t even know each other any more…”

β€œYou knew life would be like this when you married him.”

β€œBut I never thought he’d actually GO into the army!” Jessie yelled back.

Alecia snapped to attention at Jessie’s bitter words and noticed, for the first time, they were standing in the middle of the airport airing their very dirty laundry. People were slowing in the hopes of witnessing more theatrics. She took her sister-in-law by the elbow and escorted her back toward her seat.

Jessie jerked her elbow from Alecia’s grip and marched to stand in front of the large window. Margie could be seen just outside, trying to distract a tired Lisa.

β€œShe always liked you more, you know.” Jessie said, her voice sounding wistful.

β€œThat’s because I haven’t gone out of my way to antagonize the woman.”

β€œNo,” Jessie said slowly, her eyes still trained on the woman and child. β€œIt’s because you didn’t lose YOUR baby.”

Alecia sighed and resisted the urge to rub her eyes. They had had this conversation at least a hundred times in the past year. Jessie was six weeks pregnant when she miscarried. The doctors weren’t able to give them a reason for why it happened, it just happened. Jessie had never been the same afterwards.

β€œJessie,” she began slowly. β€œAt the risk of sounding harsh, you have to get over that. It happened nearly thirteen months ago. It wasn’t your fault. It wasn’t Pierce’s fault …”

Jessie held up a hand. β€œStop right there.” She turned to look at Alecia. “It was certainly Pierce’s fault.”

Alecia blinked. β€œWhat? What are you talking about?”

β€œHe beat me.”

Alecia felt like laughing, though this was no laughing matter. β€œJessie,” she began.

β€œYou don’t know what he’s like to live with!” Jessie spat. β€œHe’s moody, and unpredictable and …”

Alecia placed an arm around Jessie’s shoulders. β€œWe’ve talked about this, Jessie. He slapped you once and that was because you provoked him. I was there, remember? I saw the whole thing. Sure, he shouldn’t have hit you, but he’s human and you really did push him over the line.”

β€œBut I was pregnant,” she began weakly.

β€œAnd that slap had nothing to do with why you lost that baby, Jessie. You’re just looking for someone to blame.”

She sighed and her shoulders slumped. β€œI had such high hopes for us, Alecia.”

β€œSo, what’s changed?”

β€œUs. Me.” She said helplessly. β€œI needed him. He wasn’t there.”

β€œHe wanted to be.”

Jessie dabbed a finger under her eyelid to mop up the moisture. She was careful not to smear her makeup. β€œWe’re not like you guys. We’ve always had to work at our relationship …”

β€œAnd we haven’t?” Alecia chuckled dryly. β€œJessie, we’re not perfect. I used to be such a mouse when Carter and I first got married.” She shook her head at the memory. β€œI think Carter was first attracted to the fact that I was helpless. He could help me, he felt like a hero. And to me, he was. But then he got shipped out, and I got pregnant …” She sighed. β€œThere’s nothing like having a baby to make you grow a backbone, let me tell you.”

β€œI’ve been lonely,” Jessie began as way of an explanation.

β€œThat’s rather insulting to insinuate that I haven’t been, Jessie. Take your loneliness and times it by two.” She thumped her chest and then pointed to her baby.

Margie and Lisa were heading back inside.

Jessie sniffed and glanced at her watch. β€œShouldn’t they have arrived by now?

β€œCarter said they were delayed and — ”

β€œYou heard from Carter? When? Was Pierce with him?”

Alecia blinked at Jessie’s rapid fire questions. β€œUh … yeah, I talked to Carter about twenty minutes ago. They’re on their way now. He said something about some storms slowing them down …” she paused and gave Jessie a long look. β€œYou haven’t heard from Pierce?”

β€œAnd why should she?” Margie snapped from behind them. β€œShe lost the right to talk to my son a long time ago.”

Blog-a-thon ’08: Give An Hour

Want to know what’s going on? Visit this page

Give An Hour

Our mission is to develop national networks of volunteers capable of responding to both acute and chronic conditions that arise within our society. Our first target population is the U.S. troops and families who are being affected by the current military conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Give an Hour is asking mental health professionals nationwide to literally give an hour of their time each week to provide free mental health services to military personnel and their families. Research will guide the development of additional services needed by the military community, and appropriate networks will be created to respond to those needs. Individuals who receive services will be given the opportunity to give an hour back in their own community.

Here is some information for providers who would like to donate their time.

Here is help for visitors who are seeking assistance.
