I remember this. We were so excited to be putting the nursery together for our first born.
(Forgive my insanely high hair – for some reason, I felt I needed to wear it that high. You wouldn’t believe how much Rave hairspray I went through on a weekly basis. But then again, if you’re a a product of the 80’s, maybe you would).
We still have that crib, it’s up in our attic. Whenever Kevin cleans the attic out, he always suggests we get rid of the crib and I always tell him, in no uncertain terms, that we will NOT be getting rid of that crib – ever. I want to use it for our grandchildren.
Some day. No hurry.
Our firstborn will be 18 in a few short weeks.
I’m not sure how that is possible, considering THIS just happened a few weeks ago.
ADDED: Wait. Kevin just told me that this kind of crib is now illegal because children can get caught between the mattress and the slats.
……………
Maybe we WON’T be using this for our grandchildren. *sad face*
However, I’m posting it as a segway into the next several day’s posts.
I wrote this series of short stories as an experiment for NaNoWriMo 2009. It was hard. Really hard. Well, watch the video.
But it was also interesting, and challenging, to write a series of short stories transferring minor characters from one story and writing them in as the main character in the next story.
I intended these stories to be a series of one long chain that would eventually come full circle. Only, I never made it to the full circle part. I also tried to write these stories so that they would stand alone, too. I’m not sure if I was successful though, as I feel like I need to post the stories in the order that I wrote them just so you’ll “get” it.
These next several days will be devoted to writing – both fiction and how-tos / informational. I’m taking some of the posts that were written on Write Anything and re-posting them here. If you haven’t been to Write Anything, I highly recommend it. In fact, a little bird told me that they are on the verge of restructuring their format and since I’ve been allowed to read a bit of what they have planned and can’t be terribly specific, I can tell you that it’s going to ROCK the writing world.
He needs to be on his feet as much as possible. The more he walks, the more he works those stiff muscles and the easier it will (eventually) get for him.
We have gone to the mall once. He didn’t walk the entire length of the mall, but he walked quite a ways. He took frequent breaks (sitting on the seat on his walker) and we stopped to buy a pretzel and drink some lemonade.
That was his “reward” for making it all the way down to Auntie Annie’s Pretzels.
His walking improves every day. He’s picking up his feet and no longer shuffling along. He’s still having trouble standing upright entirely, but he’s working on putting more weight on his legs and less on his arms.
He is still experiencing a lot of swelling in his right leg. It looks about twice the size of his left leg by the end of the day. We’re not sure what to do about that and we’re hoping most of it goes away when he stops taking the Coumadin (blood thinner). He has enough Coumadin for another month’s worth and we’re thinking when that runs out, the doctor won’t require him to be on it anymore since the whole reason he was on it to begin with was because he was immobile. And apparently, when your body has been through the trauma that Kevin’s body endured, your blood thickens and gels around your vital organs as a self-preservation tactic.
At any rate, he has retired his wheelchair. He no longer uses it, actually, he flat out refuses to use it anymore.
He’s doing more and more things on his own. He made his own breakfast this morning (and we’re not talking cereal and toast, we’re talking scrambled eggs and sausage) and though it’s hard for me to step back and watch him, it’s necessary. Though Kevin’s attitude has been amazing throughout this whole ordeal, I would be lying if I didn’t admit that there are days (like yesterday), that he just gets sick to death of the whole situation and though I wouldn’t exactly say he feels sorry for himself, he gets very irritable and impatient.
I can totally understand why.
He has two more weeks of physical therapy, well, four sessions. I think we’re going to try and get him on stairs this next go-around, or sometime this week, at any rate. He also REALLY wants to get into his truck. He won’t be driving, of course, but I can certainly drive him around (it would come in handy when he has band practice).
Driving. I should ask the PT’s about when they think he might be capable of driving again. I mean, he can lift his legs and move them now so … the only issue I see is the reaction time. Though I know he’s dying to get back to normal, I think driving will likely be the last thing he attempts – we certainly don’t want to put him, or anyone on the road, in danger.
A little over two weeks before we go to New York. The question is: walker or wheelchair?
That title made you blink, didn’t it. Don’t worry, they’re virtual pets.
This program came in the mail today. Kevin has always had a fascination with fish – he says they are calming and he enjoys watching them.
We’ve had several real live fish over the years, only Kevin has ended up killing them because the first time he cleans the tank and rinses the rocks with bleach water, well, fish don’t care for bleach water very much.
This program runs on the PS3 and it’s really kind of cool. We had to buy a camera in order to make the fish “interactive” – they come to the screen whenever you get close to the TV in anticipation of being fed. And they flee if you wave your hand in front of the camera.
This week’s questions (submitted by Karie from The Five Fish – thanks Karie!):
1. So you must be a little on the wild side somewhere…how about any tattoos? Piercings? Show us your wild side. If you are free of any taintings do you want any? Piercings or tattoos?
2. Considering the state of our world today what is one thing you might change, suggest, or push for or against if you were to be elected to office?
3. Reminiscing about my impending 10 yr anniversary, can any of you recall your wedding day? Vows? Any funny or memorable moments from your special day?
(I apologize for the quality, or lack thereof, I was in a hurry to get this online before the day was over).

NEXT WEEK’S QUESTIONS:
From Robyn – Robyn’s Online World:
1. If you could visit 1 city anywhere in the world, what city would it be?
2. What is your favorite vacation you went on as a child?
3. What is the best museum you have ever been to?
