Sunday Shot

Another Hobby It’s time for another Sunday Shot …

I’m taking this opportunity to showcase, and talk a little bit about some of the pictures we (me and the husband) have taken over the years. My goal is to document the little moments in my life and appreciate those stolen moments. There is beauty all around us and I’m trying to train myself to first SEE that beauty, CAPTURE it, SAVOR it and then SHARE it with the rest of the world. If you’ve seen some great photos recently, link them up! I’d love to take a look at them.

IMG_4172.jpg

Okay, this one is a bit on the blurry side but I like love this photo for several reasons:

1. Look how squished GD is (the boy on the left). This is pretty indicative of his personality – friendly, awkward, uncomfortable, shy and loving.

2. MK’s expression (the boy on the right), was caught at the precise moment he was getting ready to blink, so it looks a little funky. But overall, his expression also speaks volumes. He’s more of a laid back sort of kid, relaxed, and not afraid to be a little different.

3. Then there’s me. I hate pictures of me (who doesn’t?) but it was a good hair day, so this photo passes muster with me. 😉

This was taken on Mother’s Day 2005. We’re sitting on our front porch and that sweater I’m wearing? Made my boobs look big.

Hubby liked that part, too. 😉

(Note to self: Photoshop those hideous wrinkles out from under your eyes. Sheesh).

Abundant Life

Teaching: Scientific Evidence That the Bible is True

Every Sunday I provide videos and valuable links to the Truth or Tradition teachings. We’ve been following the Truth or Tradition teachings for many years now and they have truly blessed our family. We have found peace and happiness through our beliefs and we walk confidently for God. My hope, by passing on this information to you, is that what you find here, or on the Truth or Tradition website, will guide you to a better, more blessed and abundant life.

If you would like to read my views on religion and how we got started with the ministry, you can read this.

Let’s get started:

If you don’t believe what the bible says, then how can you build a foundation for your faith or live the abundant life God wishes for you? Last week I posted about what the bible says about itself -it’s God-breathed and recorded by men.

This week, I’m posting a video about how there is scientific evidence that not only is the bible God-breathed and authored by God, but that God talks about things that have been scientifically proven in recent (hundreds of) years. For example, God describes to Job (which, incidentally is the oldest book in the bible!), about the Hydrologic cycle. Now of course, any grade-school student can tell you about the cycle of water, but 4,000 years ago they wouldn’t have POSSIBLY known about what the cycle was or how it worked.

God also reveals that clouds are heavy. It wasn’t until very recently that scientists discovered that clouds do indeed weigh tons and yet, they float. How then could men, mere mortals, know about these things loooooong before it was widely known or even proven?

The Bible is not a science textbook. Nevertheless, it is accurate when it mentions facts within the realm of science. Furthermore, the Bible contains physical knowledge about the world that was not generally known when the writers recorded the words of God. God created the heavens and the earth, and He intimately knows all about His creation. He simply told His prophets about the nature of earth and the universe, and they wrote down the scientific information He gave them.

Although the Bible is not a science textbook, it has some startling scientific information in it—startling primarily because at the time it was written, the information was not known to human beings.

The hydrologic cycle
The fact that water is drawn up from the earth into the air and later comes down as rain was not known in ancient times. Yet God made it clear in His written Word.

Job 36:27 and 28
(27) He draws up the drops of water, which distill as rain to the streams;
(28 ) the clouds pour down their moisture and abundant showers fall on mankind.
Ecclesiastes 1:7
All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again.

How could writers who lived hundreds of years before Christ know scientific information that we have learned about only in the last centuries? God, who created the heavens and the earth, told them.

The water in clouds
It was not generally known by ancient man that clouds are full of water. The association between clouds and rain was known because it rains only when it is cloudy, but it was definitely not known that even in good weather the fleecy clouds hold literally tons of water, something Job alluded to when he spoke of the “weight” of the clouds.

Job 26:8
He wraps up the waters in his clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under their weight.

Job 37:11
He loads the clouds with moisture; he scatters his lightning through them.

Because water is heavier than air, clouds have to be “balanced” in the sky. This is not readily apparent to those of us on the ground. It is generally assumed that clouds float because they are lighter than the air, but actually there is a lot of complex physics behind the clouds floating in the air. God spoke of this “balance” to Job some 4,000 years ago:

Job 37:16
Do you know how the clouds hang poised, those wonders of him who is perfect in knowledge?

Job 37:16 (Amplified Version)
Do you know how the clouds are balanced…?

You can read the rest of this article here.

And these are just a few examples of God’s wonderful proof that His word is true and can be trusted. Watch the video below for more physical and scientific proof that the bible can be trusted.

Saturday Photo Hunt – Dark

This week’s theme: Dark

Let’s see, I believe this was Christmas 2005. MK has a “thing” for flashlights, of any kind. So when a friend of his brought his “head” light over one time, he just HAD to have one. I believe grandma put this particular treasure in his stocking. These, of course, are good to use when it’s dark. 😉

Snipping it Off in a Mini-Skirt

I have a confession to make …

The fiction I post on Thursday, called “Thursday Thread?” Those stories aren’t always fiction. *blush* Sometimes, they are fictionalized accounts of true life events – a little creative nonfiction, if you will.

The thing is, I can’t really talk about some things that happen to me in real life on this blog. I have family, friends, and even some clients (!) who read my blog so I have to censor myself on what, and how, I document my life. On one hand, I’m okay with this, I probably need to be censored (I can get pretty carried away sometimes), on the other hand, it can be stifling. So … I will occasionally write a “story” about that event and post it for Thursday Thread.

The trick is to decide if it’s reality based. The majority of time, I won’t tell you, but in this case? I will confess; this past Thursday Thread? Really happened.

Sort of.

In order for this to make sense, you sort of need to read “Haircut Hotties.” When you’re done, come back for the explanation … go ahead, I’ll wait. I need another cup of coffee anyway …

Ready? Excellent, let’s proceed…

I really did take the boys to get their haircut this past week. And we really did go to a “Hooters for Hair” type of establishment – it’s actually called “Too Hotties” and it’s, in essence, a barber shop with estrogen.

Too Hotties

Look, I personally do not have a problem with Hooters, the restaurant, not the boobs, though I don’t have a problem with boobs either. Where was I … I mean, to me, if attractive women with big hooters want to walk around in tight t-shirts serving beer to oogling men who are only there to feed their dirty imaginations, then hey, whatever.

If you’ve ever eaten at Hooters, you know that boobs are the ONLY good thing on the menu (I can’t stand their food).

But apparently, I’m in the minority. When Hooters first came to Springfield, our bible-belt population dug out their pitchforks and polished up their superior attitudes and tried to keep the “boob” restaurant out of our town. They failed. I’m sure a lot of men heaved a sigh of grateful relief.

The women? Let’s just say, they were CRANKY about the whole thing.

But again, whatever. The one time I went there (out of curiosity, not to oogle strange women’s breasts … okay, maybe a little), and ate lunch with my husband, I was more embarrassed FOR the girls than anything else. I mean, talk about being on display! Being forced (though that’s debatable, isn’t it) to wear skin tight t-shirts and Daisy Mae short-shorts … how DEMEANING! And I hated their food, but I’ve already mentioned that part.

Again, I had no problem with the concept. They’re boobs. Big deal. To me, one set looks like the next. I wasn’t about to get on my holy horse because the way I see it? These girls have a choice whether they want to work there or not – they choose to, thereby, prepare to be oogled. The men? Choose to go and oogle. If you don’t like it, don’t go.

If you have a problem with your men going, well, that issue goes beyond the scope of this post or what I’m willing to delve into. But for me? I don’t have a problem with my husband going to Hooters. In fact, he’s often teased that when the boys get older (which would be NOW, actually), he was going to take them to lunch at Hooters.

Eh, whatever floats your boat, man. I mean, they’re guys, they’re PROGRAMMED to oogle – it’s just who they are. I’m a woman, I’m PROGRAMMED to buy dozens of shoes – it’s who I am, it’s what I DO. *wink*

In fact, my husband went to a strip club with a buddy years ago. He wasn’t sure how I would react and when he told me what they were planning to do, I simply shrugged and said, “Just don’t bring home anything contagious.”

I think he was disappointed with my reaction. But really, big deal? So he wants to go see some naked girls – great. You can look, just don’t touch.

I’ve gone to a Chippendale’s, erhm, thing several times with some gals I used to work with. Sure the guys were HAWT. But they weren’t who I went home to – OR the man who reaped the benefits afterward, either. *winkwink*

So, when the boys and I showed up at Too Hotties and I saw that it was set up like a Hooters restaurant for Hair, I cringed, but I didn’t exactly get upset. I mean, they’re BOYS, in my mind, they’re SUPPOSED to like being surrounded by attractive, half-dressed girls bearing sharp objects.

Erhm, maybe not the sharp objects part. On second thought, let’s not go down that road.

I was indeed the only female customer in the joint. We walked into a shop decorated entirely in black and red. (Sin colors perhaps? Hmm). The girls were indeed sporting short red mini-skirts with a cute little ruffle at the hem, and wearing layered black on red spaghetti strap clingy tunics and they were all attractive. The place was completely geared toward the male gender. They had comfy red leather massage chairs that faced a big-screen TV (tuned to a sports’ channel, of course). A pool table. Shoe shine chairs. Massage rooms. Tanning rooms. They even had a bar (which if you watch on the commercial on the website, you’ll see a father and son eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich at – ahhh, such a Norman Rockwell moment, *snicker*).

GD was sort of freaked out when we first got there. He’s 15 after all and PAINFULLY self-conscious so when we first drove up and he realized what sort of “barber” shop this was, he sort of freaked out. “Oh great!” he says. “I’m going to have some babe cutting my hair!”

I really had to work at suppressing my laughter.

But his horror soon melted away and though the boys were pretty uncomfortable at first, they walked away from the experience feeling pretty “okay” about going someplace just for guys. Though the girls were eye candy, the concept behind the mini-skirts was pretty spot on. Guys DO need someplace to go where they can feel, well, like guys. This wasn’t a prissy place packed with gossiping (and judgmental) women, it was a guys’ hangout where they could sit spread eagle if they chose to and just BE themselves.

I say, cool.

There was only one thing about the whole experience that made my eyebrows shoot up in surprise.

On the glass door into the establishment (just like in the story) was a red sign with white lettering, “Please tip the girls.”

Now, I realize that there are a lot of people out there that don’t tip on a regular basis and to this I say, “shame on you.” These stylists spend a lot of time washing your hair, coloring it, trimming it all so that you can leave the salon feeling confident and beautiful. They don’t get paid very much to begin with and they DESERVE to be tipped for bestowing all of that attention on you.

So I “get” that there are a lot of people out there that don’t tip and should.

HOWEVER …

When we were leaving the place, on the back of that same sign was another message, “If you did not leave a tip, then do not come back.”

ZOING!? For real??

I was so shocked at the blatant HONESTY, that I actually tripped on the way out.

Now granted, I tipped both girls, I always tip our stylists, but geez, to be that forthright about something that is sort of an unspoken rule just felt … weird. At first, I was offended. But the more I thought about it, the more I could understand the salon’s position. All I can say is, they must REALLY have had a problem with people not tipping in the past for them to feel it was necessary to post that rather brusque message.

The final verdict? The boys liked it and we’ll likely go back. And I must admit, the girls really did a nice job on their hair. They’re happy, I’m happy and I say …

Fiction: Haircut Hotties

Thursday Thread
Thursday is the day I post a bit o’ fiction.

Haircut Hotties

“Oh come on mom, do we have to?” Dustin whined from the back seat of the car.

“Please don’t start on me, Dustin. I’m getting a headache.” Janet leaned forward to look at the overcast sky. Even though she did indeed get headaches when the weather changed, she highly suspected the real reason her head was starting to pound was because it was time to take the boys to get their haircut.

She hated taking her boys to get their haircut.

“But I just got a haircut,” Dustin lamented.

“That was nearly three months ago, right after you got out of school.”

“Yeah, and?”

Janet sighed and pinched her nose to try and ward off the impending pressure. “Seriously, don’t. You need a haircut, end of story.”

“But this makes like the millionth time,” her pre-teen son said while slumping down in his seat and crossing his arms in a huff.

“Right. So what’s one more?”

Dustin mumbled something incoherent – Janet felt it was wiser to ignore his disgruntled mumblings.

“Where are we going?” Her teenage son muttered in the seat next to her.

“Do I have to actually grace that with an answer?” Janet ground her teeth and made a left turn.

“I mean,” Robert said with exaggerated patience, “I thought that haircut place was the other way.” He sat up a little straighter in his seat and looked around with growing interest. “Where the hell …”

“Robert,” she warned and her son issued a long-suffering sigh. She didn’t exactly oppose cursing, God knew she had a problem with it herself, but it somehow sounded more … obscene coming from her children’s’ mouths.

“Okay, where the HECK are you taking us, mom?” Robert smirked and shot her a cheeky look.

“We’re trying a new place.” She braced for the impact.

She wasn’t disappointed.

“What?!” Robert’s deep brown eyes widened in sudden terror. Her nearly 17-year old son abhorred change of any kind. “But I was used to the other place.”

“Yeah, but they take forever and I don’t feel like waiting around twenty minutes for them to get started on you.”

“That’s only if you don’t have an appointment,” Robert smirked.

“We have had appointments every time we’ve gone there, Rob.” She shot him an impatient glance. “Look. The ladies are nice there, and they do a good job, but you have to admit, they are sloooow. I have things to do. I can’t afford to sit around all afternoon while they gab and snip. Wouldn’t you rather get back home so you can bury your nose in your new game?”

Robert shrugged and Janet savored this one small victory. There weren’t many victories nowadays; she would take what she could get.

“So, this new place …” Robert began, his eyebrows disappearing into his shaggy bangs.

“Is different,” Janet answered and shifted uncomfortably in her seat. She wasn’t exactly sure how her boys would react when they reached the new place.

“What’s it called?” Robert asked.

Janet waved a nonchalant hand and murmured her response.

“Wait, I didn’t catch that. What is it again?” Robert turned to give her his full attention and she sensed Dustin leaning forward from the back seat.

“Uh, well,” she gulped, “I think it’s called ‘Cut by Hotties.’”

Dustin burst out laughing and Robert stroked the peach fuzz on his upper lip. “I think I’ve heard of that place,” Robert said with a grin.

“Yeah well …” Janet wasn’t sure how Robert had heard about the revolutionary barber shop and she wasn’t sure she wanted to know, quite frankly, but she was ready to try anything if it meant she wouldn’t be forced to sit and watch testosterone-driven movies for two hours while the boys got worked on at the other place.

The boys had never liked getting their haircut. Even when they were little, they would bicker, cry and generally throw a fit anytime anyone showed up with a pair of scissors in their hand. And though they had mellowed over time, it still wasn’t top on their priority list. They were beyond the causing a scene stage now, but their stony silence and their heated looks nearly always made the stylists nervous causing them to either not take off enough so that Janet had to trim them up when they got home, or they would take off too much and Janet would be forced to listen to them whine and complain until it grew back to an acceptable (and unruly) length.

As a result of the haircut drama over the years, she took them to several different places, always looking for that one stylist who would cut their hair like they wanted or who wouldn’t tremble under their obstinate behavior.

So far, they had all failed to stand up to the boys’ unrealistic expectations.

She had stopped taking them to her stylist years ago simply because she got tired of having to explain her sons’ behavior every time she went in for a color and a trim. She could understand the boys’ reluctance to have anyone touch them or put their fingers in their hair, but enough was enough. Everyone had to have their haircut at some point – it was no big deal.

She pulled into the shopping center and parked the dark blue Corolla in front of the ‘Cut by Hotties’ shop.

No one moved.

The trio sat in the car, all eyes trained on the activities inside the salon. The place was crawling with pretty girls hovering over numerous men in barber chairs. Several men were sitting along the front wall in various stages of having their hair worked on. One man was in a reclined position and was eagerly exposing his neck for a shave. Another man was talking animatedly and using his hands to make his point while keeping his eyes trained on his stylist in the mirror. Yet another man, his back to his stylist was seemingly staring straight at them.

“What’s that dude staring at us for?”

Janet felt a slow flush creep up her neck and cleared her throat. “I really have no …”

She paused as something caught her attention in her peripheral. Two women, both attractive and both wearing what looked like a skimpy uniform, were ambling toward the front door of the salon. One wore comfortable flips-flops, the soles slapped softly on the warm pavement; the other woman wore three-inch backless baby blue heels and looked like she was about ready to topple over trying to walk in them.

“I, uh,” Janet began while pointing to the women. “I’m assuming he’s staring at them.”

The man in the salon wasn’t the only person staring at the women. Robert was staring so hard his glasses began to steam.

“I remember this place now,” Robert said slowly. “It’s like a place for guys to come and get their hair done and,” he jerked his head back to the salon, his eyes greedily scanning over the girls in short red skirts and tight multi-layered black and red spaghetti strapped tunics, “the stylists are supposed to be hot.”

“Yes, well.” Robert’s interest was beginning to make her feel uncomfortable. “It’s for guys and I thought, uh, you might feel more comfortable here,” she finished weakly.

“Cool, let’s go.”

Before Janet could remove her keys from the ignition, Robert and Dustin were out of the car and opening the door to the salon.

“Swell,” Janet mumbled while dropping her keys into her purse. She rolled her eyes and slowly followed her boys into the salon. She noted the “Please tip the girls” sign prominently displayed on the glass door.

Just what kind of a tip are we talking about here? Janet thought as she approached the bubbly brunette behind the counter. “Uh, hi,” she began feeling immediately intimidated by the pretty girl and self-conscious that she was the only female customer in the place. “Robert and Dustin for one o’clock.”

“Right,” the girl responded while chomping on her gum. “We’re all ready for them. Won’t you have a seat?”

Janet looked around but couldn’t see anywhere to sit down. “Where do I sit?”

“Oh,” the girl waved a manicured hand airily behind her, “Just take one of those massage chairs, if you want. They’re quite comfortable.”

Janet slowly walked back to the red leather chairs and sank down, her buttocks perched primly on the edge. She gripped her purse and stared up at the big screen TV – it was tuned to a sports’ channel.

She had never felt so exposed in all her life. Now she knew how men felt when they went into a more traditional salon.

She didn’t like the feeling.

She cleared her throat and tried to look around without actually meeting anyone’s eyes. Maybe her boys wouldn’t like this place either and they could go back to a more traditional-style salon – one that smelled like hair dye and fingernail polish remover.

Janet finally located her boys. They were side-by-side and caught up in a conversation with their stylists.

They didn’t look unhappy. In fact, they looked like they were in a trance, a silly, sappy grin plastered on both of their faces. Robert caught her eye in the mirror at his station and gave her a thumbs-up sign.

Janet carefully schooled her face into a mask of indifference, yet she doubted if anyone would have noticed the lone, frumpy woman in the red leather chair anyway. She gave Robert a little wave as she blindly dug into her bag for her cell phone. As discreetly as possible, she speed-dialed her best friend, Tonya.

“Tonya?” she began, her voice balanced somewhere between amused and worried, “you know that restaurant Hooters?” She waited until Tonya responded before continuing. “Well, we now have a Hooter’s for Hair. Guard your husband, it’s enemy territory over here.”

Thursday Thirteen

Thursday Thirteen – Things that Begin with B

null

Thirteen “B” Words that Describe my Life

Scrolling through my life, one letter at a time.

By the way, this makes my 113th TT.

1. Boring – I’m not a thrill seeker. The most excitement I have all week is renting a new movie. I don’t like to spend a lot of money so I’ve conditioned myself to be satisfied with doing free stuff- like reading, riding my bike or surfing the web (which isn’t necessarily free, but you get the idea). Though I’m not exactly boring to hang out with, I’m not someone who will keep you awake, either.

2. Blessed – I have an awesome family. Not a perfect family, but an awesome family. Though my oldest son is hormonal, moody and sullen, I still catch glimpses of his true personality and that usually holds me over until the next bout of crappy behavior. My youngest is a sweet, thoughtful, goofy, small kid who is constantly surprising me. My husband is a kind, thoughtful man who is okay with me staying home and making virtually no money (I’m working on that, honey!)

3. Bitchy – I’m a fairly nice person (emphasis on fairly), but I do indeed have hours moments when I’m, um, a tad on the snarky side. This usually occurs when I encounter stupid people, or I’m forced to do something I don’t want to do, or I have a headache, or I’m tired, or … well hell, this isn’t looking good.

4. Bubbly – Though I am boring and can be bitchy, I can also be bubbly when the occasion calls for such behavior. But it’s a fun, carefree bubbly, not the kind of bubbly some women get so that you feel like poking them with a needle just to allow all that excess happiness out.

5. Bloated – This is an ongoing condition with me. I have digestive problems (my mother thinks it’s gall bladder related, but we won’t go there until it gets REALLY bad) so I constantly feel bloated and puffy. As a result, I rarely feel sexy.

6. Believable – I’m an excellent liar. In fact, if this was an admirable trait, I’d put it on my resume. I can make anybody believe anything – with a straight face and sincere eyes. Seriously. Did I tell you about the time I participated in a Missouri beauty pageant? No? Some other time then. 😉

7. Baloney – Most of the stuff you read on this blog? Baloney. I’m not exactly lying (though I bet you’re wondering now), but I rarely tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help me God. Oh, and I hate baloney – both literal and figurative. The actual baloney meat makes me feel bloated (see? Always bloated), but the figurative baloney I get from people drives me insane. If you’re going to lie, then lie WELL, for pete sakes.

8. Berate – I berate my children people all the time. Though I pride myself on being an optimistic person, I simply can’t stomach wishy-washy, stupid people. Here’s a thought, think about what you want to say before opening your mouth. Please, do us all a favor. Seriously.

9. Beverage – I absolutely, positively MUST have coffee every day – sometimes twice a day. There’s really no justifying this weakness nor trying to explain why; I simply must make it so.

10. Business – For the past two years, I’ve designed and maintained websites for six area schools, three restaurants, one financial company and have narrated classes for an online school in New York. I’m currently working on offering blog templates (sometime in the next decade) and submitting some of my writing. That’s what I do – that’s what I am.

11. Baggage – I don’t have a lot of emotional baggage. True, I’ve had some pretty shocking things happen to me in the past, but I’ve been pretty successful at leaving my baggage on the carousel and dodging the occasional phone call to come pick it up. Life is too short to dwell on past mistakes – move on.

12. Bullet – I wear bulletproof vests. I bet you didn’t know that about me, did you. Even if you looked closely (and this is assuming I’d allow you to get close enough to try), you wouldn’t see it. I’ve bulletproofed my heart and there is simply no way anything, or anybody, can puncture it. Okay, that’s not entirely true – there are ways, but they aren’t obvious so I’m not worried about anyone trying. How’s that for vague? 🙂

13. Blogger – I’ve become a full-time blogger. At least, I feel like a full-time blogger. I spend an unhealthy amount of time online and I’m not ashamed to admit it (okay, maybe I’m a tad ashamed). I adore blogging and I adore quite a few bloggers. I feel like I’m part of a community and even though I’ll most likely never, ever meet 98% of the people I’ve “talked” to online, I consider them friends. Blogging is better than drugs – not that I’ve ever tried drugs. *cough*
