Don’t Fool with Mother Nature

“Mother never had a sense of humor.” He sat a moment staring at his hands before continuing. “Like the time I bought a can of fake snow and sprayed down her precious orange tree just outside our kitchen window.”

“What happened when she saw the tree?”

He smiled. “She nearly had a heart attack. Her expression was priceless. I couldn’t sit down for two days after that stunt but by God, it was worth it,” he sputtered out a maniacal laugh.

“Times up, Mr. Holden,” the prison guard addressed him.

Holden watched his client leave and swallowed back his distaste.

The Light Within

Toby signed his name with flourish and stuffed the card into the envelope.

He smiled. He hoped the person it was addressed to would appreciate the message. He giggled softly when he pictured the reaction.

He placed the card next to his heart and stared out of the window with unseeing eyes. He wasn’t misinterpreting their relationship, was he? He thought back to their lunch the previous day…

“Toby! Are you done yet?”

He plunged the card into the bin of tangled up holiday lights. He whirled around to greet his mother, his cheeks burning.

The name on the card was just visible through the wires: Michael.

Empty Promises

“So, you’re leaving your wife, right?”

“I told you I would, didn’t I?”

Sheila watched her married lover hurriedly pull on his pants and shrug into his t-shirt. He kept glancing at the clock.

“I’m going to be late,” he mumbled.

She tucked the sheet under her chin. “But you’re gonna do it this time, right?”

He shot her an impatient look, “Where’s my wedding ring?” he asked, his voice tinged with panic.

Something shiny caught her eye next to his pillow.

The early November sunshine cast golden rays onto the diamond chip.

Reaching out, she curled her fingers around the ring and assumed an innocent expression.

A Cutting Sense of Humor

She noticed the knives missing from the butcher block right away.

Then the house went completely dark.

“Okay you guys,” she laughed, the sound laced with anxiety, “cut it out.”

She wished she had checked the time on her watch before the lights went out. She felt like she had been babysitting the evil twins for days instead of hours.

She heard a rustling outside the window. They had gone outside.

Again.

She mumbled under her breath and opened the closet door to grab her jacket.

The twins jumped out.

“Trick or treat!” they shouted as the door opened…

She noticed they had a knife in each hand.

A Cry for Help

Lori could feel nearly every muscle, every nerve, tighten painfully. She placed her hands on the washing machine and held on. She watched the water pour into the tub. Her anxiety was nearly palpable.

She could just make out her baby’s shrill cries over the noise of the machine. Two days now she’d listen to her daughter scream so loudly it made her brain vibrate. She couldn’t take much more. She was tired and frustrated.

If only I had a hammer!” She yelled into the basin. She gasped at the sheer energy of her outburst and immediately felt sick.

It was time to get help.

Pumpkin Carving

“Mommy, why are you buying two pumpkins?”

Stephanie looked down at her sweet daughter’s face and smiled. “Just because.”

“I wish daddy was here,” her five-year old son said.

“Yeah, me too,” Stephanie responded, though she didn’t really mean it.

They left the pumpkin patch and returned home. After she had tucked the children into bed, she grabbed the plumpest pumpkin and sat down at the kitchen table. She calmly took the picture she had blown up of her ex-husband, taped it carefully to the pumpkin and grabbing a large, sharp butcher knife, she cheerfully gouged his eyes out.

Where’s Tom?

I stood frozen in front of the flickering images on my TV.

I quickly squeezed my eyes shut, effectively blocking the image from my eyes, but not my brain.

I must be dreaming.

I opened my eyes …

The nightmare was still smoldering. I dropped to my sofa and stared. Tears began tickling the corners of my lids – I did not try to stop them.

“Do you know where Tom is?” my sister said. She looked at her cell phone. “I can’t get a hold of him.”

I gasped.

“What?”

My sister didn’t hear the newscaster.

I knew where Tom was.

I looked back at the TV – the buildings continued to burn.
