Weekend Top 5: The One Where I Complain About Taxes

weekendtopfive

Weekend Top 5 is hosted by Kristi at The Wheelz are Rolling

number The husband drove me absolutely bonkers this weekend. Picture this: I’m standing, stock still, in a room. I’m not moving a muscle. The husband, on the other hand, is a blur, zipping from room to room, never stopping to take a breath, never stopping to take a break. He’s in constant motion.

He was like that the entire day yesterday. I think the man was on speed. Or he drank too much caffeine or … something. No human being should have that much energy, it’s sick.

I think it bothered me mainly because I felt guilty. He was getting so much done! He vacuumed, he shined up our dining room table that had been sticky and grungy for months (we used this stuff – GOOD stuff. It looks brand new again). And quite honestly? I don’t even know what else he got done because I was too busy being annoyed with him to pay too much attention.

Where does that man get all of his energy? I think I might have one thimbleful of his energy. Which annoys me and it annoys him because he wants to go-go-go and I want to sleep-sleep-sleep.

number4 However, I forced myself to just sort of step back and allow the man to leave tire tracks on me because he spent FIVE HOURS on our taxes.

Five. As in one more than four. Apparently, our taxes are more complicated this year than in previous years because my husband’s company set up stock options for him and that required about 50 more forms than we’re normally used to.

Thank God he’s an accountant because there would be no way I could even attempt to do our taxes.

But he’s done and I’d like to run some totals by you because taxes are one of my biggest pet peeves and I don’t think people truly think about how much the government is taking from us.

I’ve been forbidden to give you actual numbers, but consider this – the government took enough from us this past year to pay for two cars.

Really nice cars.

And in the end? We’re getting six percent of that back. Six. That means, the government demanded a big chunk of our money, squandered it and then had the decency to feel a bit bad about it and gave us our six percent back. That’s why I get so angry when people say, “But I’ll get that back in April!”

Uh no. People get a small sliver of what they pay out back in April. Heck, some people don’t even get that. AARGH! Message to government: manage our money more wisely and stop bleeding us dry!

Okay, rant over.

Here are some facts that I thought were interesting:

We spent a little under half of what we made last year. Not bad! I think that’s mainly because we do not have any debt save for my car. Everything else (including the house), is paid off.

Since my husband is an accountant, he keeps track of this sort of thing …

I spent $317.00 dollars on hair last year (me and the boys – the husband uses a Flowbee on his hair. I know, dorky right? But wow, it does a good job on his hair).

I spent $1,274.00 dollars at Amazon.com last year – I really thought that would be higher as it seems like I’m always ordering stuff from them.

I spent $118.00 dollars on scented lotions.

I spent $138.00 to tan.

We spent $1,296.00 dollars to enable MK to play his saxophone.

I spent $743.00 at Starbucks. (Which will stop because I’m about 92% sure there is something in Starbucks coffee that is giving me digestive problems).

And a whopping $11,711.00 dollars at Wal-Mart. Wow.

And the list goes on and on (like five pages on). It’s really interesting to see where all your money goes. I wonder if people kept better track of where their money was going if the government would even be successful in raising taxes to begin with. They would certainly be forced to manage existing money more carefully, that’s for sure.

number3 Now that we’ve crunched some numbers and have an accurate idea of our financial situation, we have decided that we’re going to go ahead and plan for a Disney vacation this summer.

The boys are not excited. In fact, when I enthusiastically mentioned that we were going on a Disney World vacation this summer (!), they actually grimaced.

It’s because they still associate Mickey Mouse with little kids. They honestly have no idea just how COOL Disney World is. I mean, given our interests in technology and science alone, we could spend our entire vacation at Epcot center and be very happy.

But they’ll come around. In the meantime, I bought a guide and I’ve been haunting the American Airline website looking for travel packages. The husband is not excited about spending the money (of course), but I’m being insistent. Not because I’m crazy about spending the money (hello?! I’m Queen Cheap, remember?) but because we only have a few good years left with our boys before they move on with their lives. GD will graduate in two years!! Then he’ll either go to college and/or get a job. He won’t have the freedom (or even the desire) to spend his vacation with us.

So, tough. We’re going to make the most of these next few years and create some pretty awesome family memories – while we can. We can sit home and be cheap when we’re old.

number2 GD wanted to buy Halo 2 for his computer. So, we went to Game Stop to see if they had it.

Have I mentioned that GD would like to get a job at Game Stop? And this particular Game Stop is pretty close to our house so technically, he could ride his bike there, no problem. (Because he’s not ready to drive yet).

GD is pretty laid back. And he doesn’t really show a lot of emotion. But I have to say, that boy CAME ALIVE in that place. His eyes sparkled and he just looked so … animated – it was really quite cool.

He wants to work there. He’s a die-hard gamer and the thought of being surrounded by all those games, by all the new gaming news and being on the cutting edge of everything just made his mouth water. I’m really going to try and (gently) push him into getting a job there. I think that would be such a good place for him to interact with the world – on his terms.

But since he’s not ready to get his driver’s license yet and he still needs an ID in order to apply for a job (which is his plan for the summer), then I plan on taking him up to the DMV on spring break and helping him get an ID.

That should be an experience.

number1 We’re finally trading our old house heater in for a newer model. It all started with smelling gas.

Well, GD and the husband smelled gas – I have never smelled it but that doesn’t surprise me – my sniffer sucks.

It was weird because they didn’t smell gas all the time, just sometimes and only in certain areas of the house – and those areas would be different each time. So, I’m thinking they smelled something that smelled like gas but wasn’t actually gas.

But this freaked the husband out and now he’s on a mission to make sure we don’t have a gas leak. He bought some sort of gas-detecting instrument and spent some time walking around the house to see if he could detect any gas – I’m relieved to say he didn’t detect any.

But the episode got us to thinking. This house is over 30 years old. And that heater is the original heater that came with the house when it was built. It’s probably about time to replace it. Not only that, but heaters nowadays are so much more energy efficient than ours that it’ll save us money in the long run.

The guy came out and gave us an estimate of what it would cost – which was lower than what the husband was predicting so it’s a done deal. The guy will come out in a few weeks and do the deed. He told us that our current heater is only running about 40% efficient at this time and our new one will run at 90% efficient.

It’ll be interesting to see what difference that makes in how that heats our home and how that effects our pocket book.

We’re slowly, but steadily, making the move to be more “green.”

Weekend Top 5 – Last Monday in 2008

I dropped my nephews back off at their dad’s. They came over on Christmas day and stayed a few nights with us. I think we’re still recovering (from sleep deprivation).

My boys and my sister’s boys are best friends. They all get along beautifully and my nephews never give me a moment’s trouble. They are always so quiet and respectful and they are a joy to have around.

They spent the majority of their time playing new video/computer games, but they did abandon the games for a few hours on Saturday to hang outside (it was 60 degrees that day and a perfect “hang” day).

They walked up to the firehouse and goofed off … well here, GD took our video camera and taped their antics. My husband then edited it in our video software, (the effect is some sort of sphere effect), put some music to it and you can watch the video if you’d like:

I know, crazy right? But they are ALL about being random. They spend HOURS watching crazy videos on YouTube and enjoy the random/nutty videos the most. I think they had that in mind when they made this video. You can’t get more random than this video. πŸ˜€

They had fun though and it’s given me ammunition to use against them for future holidays so what more could a mom ask for? Bwhahaha.

The tree is gone.

Taking it Down

The kids aren’t that happy about it.

Taking Down Decorations

None of us like taking decorations down. It’s like we’re boxing up our joy for another year. Reality knocked on our door and we had no choice but to let it back in.

*sigh* It’s a bit depressing, isn’t it. (But I’m relieved to have things back to normal).

***3***

Since we didn’t have a chance to spend time with my husband’s folks on Christmas day, they invited us out to lunch over the weekend. We ate at some Mexican restaurant and it was easily one of the worst meals I’ve ever eaten.

I originally ordered a combination plate – some sort of pepper … thing, and a chalupa. What I got was some sort of pepper … thing and a tostada.

The pepper thing was a large chili pepper wrapped in a corn tortilla shell and smothered in cheese. Sounds good, right? Well, it was, sort of, but it was so spicy that after two bites I had to give it up. It felt like someone had dumped in a shovelful of embers into my mouth; I couldn’t get away from the burning sensation for hours after that.

The rest of my plate was covered in refried beans – I can’t eat beans. I’d go into details about what happens when I eat beans, but I’ll spare you the gory details.

You’re welcome.

Suffice it to say, I left the restaurant more hungry than when I went in. I hate when that happens. (I could have said something to our server, but honestly, I wasn’t sure if I had ordered the right thing to begin with and I LOATHE causing waves so I just smiled and acted like I wasn’t hungry).

But it was nice to see my in-laws (because believe it or not, I like my in-laws) and I know my husband enjoyed chatting with his father so the bad meal? Was worth the time and effort. πŸ™‚

I finished reading my first book on my Kindle. The book? Get a Clue by Jill Shalvis.

First Kindle Book

I realized, after I read the book, that I already had a print copy of the book in my bookshelf.

*SIGH* I-am-such-a-dork.

That’s a sign that you have too many books and don’t keep very good track of your inventory. In fact, I think this is like the 200th time I’ve done that: ordered a book that I already have.

SO, I’ll probably be giving my print copy of Get a Clue away very soon. Stay tuned for that.

Overall? I like my Kindle. It took a little getting used to at first – the next/previous page buttons are HUGE and though conveniently located they are often easy to hit by accident. But after you get used to handling it, it really didn’t bug me overly much.

I’m very pleased with the screen/typeface. It’s extremely easy on the eyes (it’s just like reading a newspaper) and I enlarged the font so I was able to comfortably read for an extended period of time.

I browsed the Kindle store on Amazon last night and downloaded three more books – all for free!! Of course, there may be a reason why they’re free, but we’ll see. It’s SO COOL to click a button on your computer and then wait for the book to download to the Kindle – it takes less than a minute. Very impressive! I’m going to have a blast with this thing and now I will always have some reading material with me.

The Kindle is no larger than a paperback book which means I should have room to carry it in my purse.

After I buy a bigger purse.

Because I also bought a case for my new Canon PowerShot A590 IS camera which I plan on carrying around with me, too.

It never ends, does it.

I just found out that my husband won the office football pot/thing/contest, whatever it’s called.

Actually, he tied with another gal so they had to split the winnings. Hey! I’ll gladly accept that $90 bucks, thank you very much. (Which we’ll probably put into savings because my husband – who is an accountant and tight-fisted but that’s okay because we’re in good financial shape because of him – doesn’t know what else to do with money in his pocket).

This is especially funny because my husband? Never watched ONE football game this season. Not one. It was all luck. Or WAS it?

This is REALLY annoying to his accountant friend who IS a big football fan and really went overboard trying to figure out stats and blahblahblah (I sort of zone out when it comes to sports stuff like that – hey, zone out! I punned ya). The friend didn’t do very well and here’s my husband, not a big football fan and never even watched a game and he ties for first.

It almost makes us feel guilty for winning.

Almost. *grin*

Ringing Salvation Army Bell w/ Classmate

MK (boy on right) and a classmate participated in a community service project through their school on Saturday. They stood out in 20 degree weather and took turns ringing the bell for an hour.

What troopers.

(I smudged the school name so that’s why it looks a little funky).

Weekend Top Five – Writing, Listening, Decorating

I just found a new meme, thanks to Deb at Mom of 3 Girls (hi Deb! Haven’t been by in a while – love the digs!).

This meme is hosted by Kristi at The Wheelz are Rolling (hi Kristi! Nice to meet you!) and I’m all over this like sprinkles on chocolate syrup covered ice cream (NOT that I’ve been eating chocolate covered ice cream *ahem*)

weekendtopfive The meme is called “Weekend Top 5”. I most likely will not participate every weekend for the simple fact we don’t DO anything on the weekends – we’re normally in a vegetated state of limpness, but this weekend? Was pretty busy.

5. I went to the MSU library and got a ton of writing done. (In fact, I’m heading there again after I post this entry). For those just joining us (welcome!), I’m participating in the NaNoWriMo challenge – which means I have until November 30th to write 50,000 words – I’m currently at 39,000 + words (you can see my progress chart in the sidebar). I haunt the university library because it’s super quiet (no screaming kids which is sort of a REQUIREMENT at public libraries and which irritates me to NO end when I’m trying to write – just saying), and since I have to have it super quiet to write, it works out beautifully.

I actually arrived at the library right at 9:00 a.m., right when they opened, so I’m sort of lucky I didn’t arrive a minute earlier or I would have been the total loser parked on the library steps, on a beautiful Saturday no less, that everyone would have gossiped about on Monday.

(I give myself way too much credit).

And may I just say to my regular readers, I bet you’re SICK TO DEATH hearing about NaNoWriMo, aren’t you. *grin* Hang in there, we’re on the homestretch and I’ll shut up about it shortly.

Of course, I also spent that time writing down deadlines and submission guidelines for the literary magazine Glimmer Train because my goal in January? Is to write a ton of short stories that hopefully will good enough to submit. What can I say? This joint ain’t called WRITE From Karen for no reason. *grin*

4. MK’s Honors Band Concert. This is the second year MK has tried out for, and made, honors band (he plays the alto saxophone, in case you didn’t know that). It’s a city-wide competition that all of the middle school band students (well not all, just the ones who are interested, which this year was a record turn out, from what I’m told) audition for. If they make it, they play together, for the first time, all day, one Saturday, songs they have never played before, and perform for their parents/family. (Wow, that was a lot of commas in one sentence).

It’s an exhausting, long day for the kids but WOW. The end result was truly amazing. They sounded phenomenal! In fact, we ordered a CD – when we get it, I’ll burn it to an MP3 format and let ya’ll hear them. Not bad for a bunch of 13/14 year olds!

It was truly a proud parent moment. πŸ˜€

Honors Band - The Big Picture

3. I started my exercise routine back up this weekend.

Oy.

I’ve been pretty lazy distracted this month what with the writing challenge and all, (geez, NOT the writing challenge thing again??) and have simply gotten out of the habit of prying my butt out of my computer chair (you should SEE the indentation, it’s quite impressive – think Grand Canyon impressive) so, I walked last night.

Oy.

For those that don’t know, my normal exercise routine is to do Turbo Jam for 20 minutes and then walk for six miles on my treadmill while watching a movie. (It’s really not as impressive as it sounds – the time flies by when your attention is diverted away your “barking” legs). However, I did not do Turbo Jam last night (I don’t have a death wish), I just stuck to the six miles and today?

Oy. I feel like walking jello.

2. Thanksgiving is late this year. (I bet you didn’t know that! See what sort of valuable information you take away with you when you visit me?! You’re welcome *grin*) This makes me cranky because normally, this time of year, I’m putting Christmas decorations up.

So hey, screw it. We decided to become one of those annoying people who put Christmas lights up before Thanksgiving (we’re like the only ones so far on our block – I am a wee bit embarrassed).

Our House
(This is actually from last year, but it’s the same set up).

The boys helped the husband put lights up outside while I assembled our fake Christmas tree. (I’m WAY too lazy to water a real tree, but ya’ll knew that, right?)

Tangled Mess
(The oldest son doing what we all LOVE doing, untangling the Christmas lights)

We had a great time decorating – we hung lights, decorated the tree, listened to Christmas music, drank hot cocoa – I LOVE this time of year.

I plan on posting some pictures of some of our Christmas ornaments along with a few decorations in the coming weeks, stay tuned.

1. All of the Christmas decorations got me in the mood to change my template (hey RSS readers, click over if you get a chance!).

Again, I feel a MITE uncomfortable posting this before Thanksgiving, but considering it’ll only be up for a month, well, we need to get this Christmas party started, right? *grin*

I’ll change the header for New Year’s and then post something a little more semi-permanent after New Year’s Day … if I can ever decide on what I want to do. So many possibilities … so little patience.

I will be out most of the day, working on my NaNoWriMo project. GADS, will I ever stop talking about that stupid project?!

See? I can hear your thoughts. Scary, isn’t it. πŸ™‚

Monday Stuff

Menu Plan Monday – October 20th

It’s been a while since I participated in this meme. As you all know, I’m not exactly a big fan of cooking, but we have to eat so … here we are.

The husband and I have been watching The Food Network again. We go through stages where we feel the need to learn new recipes and try something new (okay, HE feels the need to try something new because he gets sick of the same old crap I cook every night and to keep the peace, I go along with him. *grin*)

We’ve been watching these shows specifically:

Everyday Italian (or as my husband calls it, Everyday Cleavage because the woman loves to show her girls off. But hey, she’s hot, so she’s entitled, I suppose). Her recipes are cool, but a bit too fancy for my tastes. She also likes her wine – the lush. *grin*

Paula’s Home Cooking – LOVELOVELOVE this woman. She is so bubbly and cute and I love when she has her husband and sons on to “help” her. We’ve actually seen quite a few Paula recipes we’d like to try.

Quick Fix Meals – this woman’s eyes FREAK ME OUT, (I think she thinks her eyes are too squinty so she over compensates by opening them really wide and she just looks like a serial killer when she does that), but her recipes are right up my alley – nutritious and fast.

(We try and watch Rachel Ray, but I find her extremely annoying in a most pesky way. I think it’s the voice?)

I’ll let ya’ll know if/when we try any of the recipes shown on these shows and how they turned out. It should be a regular I Love Lucy moment, let me tell you. 8)

Here’s our menu for this week:

Sunday: Chicken Fried Rice – I really couldn’t find a similar recipe on Cooks.com so I’ll just tell you that this is one of the stir fry recipes my husband cooks and it’s delish! He stir fries chicken, cubed carrots, scrambles a few eggs and rice together and we top it with soy sauce. It’s a family favorite. (Especially mine, because he cooks it. *grin*)

Monday: Tostadas

Tuesday: Ham & Potato Skillet (Substitute yogurt for the sour cream. You’ll never be able to taste the difference and it’s lower in fat).

Wednesday: Smothered Steak – I actually got this recipe from a gal I used to work with. You just brown top-round steak, then lower the heat to simmer. Pour two cans of tomato sauce and one can of stewed tomatoes on top of the meat and then add a green pepper and onion to the concoction about four hours into the cooking time (cook on simmer all day) and that’s it! It’s melt in your mouth tender and my guys love it. Don’t forget the yeast rolls!

Thursday: Chicken and Dumplings: This is a great meal this time of year; it takes the chill out of the chilly nights. We actually bought a steamer (which I had no idea how to use until the husband explained it to me – and you only THOUGHT I was kidding about my whole ‘I don’t cook unless I have to’ spiel) so I’ll most likely make carrots to go with the dumplings using the new steamer.

Friday and Saturday – we “go git.” It’s tradition. And I get cranky if I have to cook more than four times a week (Sunday is the husband’s turn to cook).

What’s on your menu this week? Do you have any recipes you MUST share with me? I’m specifically looking for recipes with ham in it. Suggestions?

Weekend Snapshot(s) – On the Move

null
Share your weekend snapshot.

We were a family on the move this weekend.

Saturday, the husband and I drove to Mt. Vernon for the Apple Butter Makin’ Days’ Festival. (I know my mom is probably blinking in shock over that sentence *grin*). It was a gorgeous day and I was craving apple butter. Seriously, the apple butter at the Apple Butter Makin’ Days is THE best apple butter I’ve ever tasted.

So, we drove 20 minutes and bought a jar. We did walk around and look at all the cool crafts – in fact, I bought GD’s first birthday gift, a wooden keychain with his name engraved on it – but we didn’t stay very long. The place was PACKED and it was like walking through a hive of busy, stinky (the air was thick with BO!) bees.

By the time we got back home, it was time to leave to take MK up to the high school to play with the marching band – again. Last weekend was optional and for extra credit. This week was mandatory and for a grade, so his entire band class showed up.

We (and Springfield’s entire south side) went for ice cream afterward. It was a nice, relaxing family outing and even GD loosened up by the time it was all over. (He was pretty stiff and awkward in the stadium, but I think that was largely due to the fact that we had about four HOT girls sitting behind us and he was feeling self-conscious.

I’m so THANKFUL not to be a teenager anymore. πŸ™‚ )

After Bible study Sunday, we went and had our family pictures taken at Sears. They are REALLY good, except for one thing – my hair looks hideous. Seriously. I love this cut (it’s layered all over again as opposed to just being one length), but I still haven’t quite figured out how to style it so it looks like I slept on it in the pictures. Or maybe I’m just used to having poofy 80’s hair – who knows. At any rate, I love the poses and my guys all did really great so overall, I’m pretty happy with them. I will be posting the family shot in Saturday’s Photo Hunt – stay tuned.

After we had our pictures taken, we coaxed GD into getting behind the wheel of the husband’s truck, and we took him to a parking lot to try it out.

Driving - First Time

If you look closely, you can juuust make out the whites of his knuckles. In fact, I’m pretty sure I heard the boy’s heart thumping through the seat. *grin*

Other than whiplash from being jerked around so much (I was in the back seat – he has an extended cab, the husband was in the passenger seat), he didn’t do too badly.

No. He doesn’t have his permit yet. Ssh. And we have NO intentions of taking him on ANY roads, country or otherwise, but I think the husband is sort of excited about teaching GD to drive and just couldn’t hold it in any longer.

GD drove the truck for about fifteen minutes. He circled around the parking lot several times. He practiced parking and backing up (I lost about six months off my life the first time he laid on the accelerator and nearly backed into a light pole) and tried to get a grip on turning. Now granted, the truck is huge and a bit awkward to begin with, but there was no way in Hades I was allowing the boy to drive my Vibe so he sort of didn’t have a choice but to get used to it. But he did pretty well considering this was his first time getting behind the wheel.

And afterward? His eyes were SPARKLING with excitement.

Behind the Wheel - First Time

Sunday afternoon, the husband parked his truck in our backyard and proceeded to cover it with plastic.

Taping it Up 2

It was sort of hard to cover considering it was pretty windy.

Taking it Up

But after he covered it, he then spray painted the bed to cover the rust and scratches.

It looks almost brand new.

That’s what we do. We monkey-rig our belongings to mask the fact that it’s old and well used. But hey, it’s better than forking over cash, and going into debt, to buy a new one, right? πŸ˜€

Give Me Five More Things to Do, Baby

Yay! A new meme to try out!

I was going to participate in Laura’s Menu Plan Monday because, I don’t know, it’s Fall and I think about cooking more when it’s cooler …

But then I saw this cute little meme and thought I would play along with this one this week …

So, hi Becca’s Buzz! I hope you have room for one more player!

This week? List five things you should do this week.

ONLY five? Uh oh … I’ll try to pare it down.

1. Get my haircut like Tina Fey.

I have a MAJOR girl crush on Tina Fey. LOVE that woman. So funny. So smart. So gorgeous! I watched Baby Mama on the treadmill last night (cute! But predictable) and I just fell in love with this woman’s hair. I could easily do the same thing with my hair – EASILY. In fact, we’re scheduled to have our family pictures taken this coming Sunday and I’m sick to death of my style-less hair. So, hopefully, by the time you read this, I’ll be at the salon getting it chopped, er, shaped up.

2. Work on my NaNoWriMo outline.

Seriously, I need to get on the ball here. It’s not that I don’t have an idea of what I’m going to write, I’m just savoring the moment, sort of like when you unwrap a piece of chocolate and you take a few moments to simply sniff it and appreciate it before popping it into your mouth. Oh wait, I don’t do that, but I COULD if I had the self control …

which I don’t. But let’s not talk about that little character flaw of mine right now. We’ll save that one for around the holidays. (I, uh, go a bit NUTS on the holiday goodies. *blush*)

3. Bug the ever-loving crap out of my husband for one of these ADORABLE babies.

What. You were expecting a picture of a cute animal or something? Pfft. Folks, you don’t know me very well. I get just as worked up over cute electronic gadgets as some people do over tiny dog clothes. It’s a sickness, I tell you!

I MUST HAVE ONE OF THESE MINI DELL 9’s!!!! I will have one. It will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.

4. Design a new blog design for a friend of mine.

She’s the president of our city’s PTA organization and she would like me to design a new template for their blog WHICH she plans on showing off at the State’s National PTA Annual Convention in a few weeks. *gulp* This could mean a lot more blog/school business for me if I play my cards right.

No pressure!!

5. Write a short story to submit to Glimmer Train.

This is a literary magazine I’ve been wanting to submit to for like, forever. In fact, I heard an EXCELLENT story idea on the radio this morning and I think it might just fit in with the Glimmer Train readers. I’m really excited to write about it – and submit it.

Wow. I had so much fun doing this meme! I need something like this to keep me on track.

Oh, and if you need a little Monday pick-me-up (because Mondays suck, no?), then you MUST watch these videos. Truly, if these videos don’t melt your heart and bring a tender smile to your face, then you’re not human.
