We Go From “Tossing Ideas Around” to BAM – Doing It

You know how when you move into a new place, you begin daydreaming of all the things you’d like to change about the house “one of these days.”

We had quite a list; get rid of the linoleum in the foyer and put down tile. (Kevin put that down. Yes. He’s quite awesome).

Modernize the kitchen. (Before After)

Put hardwood floors down in the living room / dining room.

Remodel the bathrooms (a coming [very] soon project. At least, I hope it happens soon. We still haven’t heard anything from our contractor. Kevin called them this past week and they were still waiting on materials. I know they want to have everything before they get started so they can do the job and get out, but still, I’ll breathe easier when they actually get started).

And rip up the carpet in our family room and put in hand-scraped hardwood.

Well guess what sort of “just happened?”

We were out looking at tile for our bathrooms (which we’ve picked out, by the way), when we spotted this gorgeous wood:

IMG_1139

We quickly became sidetracked. We got to talking to the salesman and lo and behold, the floor guy, the SAME floor guy who put the tile in our kitchen and the hardwood floors in our living/dining rooms, was available for this coming week.

As in … this coming Monday.

As in … the day after tomorrow.

So. Because we knew this was something we wanted to do eventually, we bit the bullet and said, “let’s do it.”

The guy delivered the wood Friday.

IMG_1138

(And yes. I have a candle burning just inches from our new wood. I like to live dangerously, apparently).

The wood has to have a few days to get used to the temperature of the room you’re going to place it in, hence the reason we have boxes of wood lying around our family room.

He’s supposed to come around 9ish Monday morning and he’s telling us he should have it done the same day. I’m really hoping he’s right and I come home to a brand new floor.

The carpet in our family room is only about six years old. It’s still in pretty good shape. The problem is, see that blue arrow above? About two years into it, the carpet began to buckle. We have no idea why. The family room is the room we use the most. At least, me and Kevin use it the most. (The boys barely step out of their rooms). So there’s a lot of traffic through the room. We’re also wondering if the carpet guys didn’t pull it tight enough when they installed it. But we knew that we would eventually replace it, so we never bothered having anyone come out to stretch it because why waste that money on something you plan on getting rid of anyway, right? So, we’ve been disappointed with the carpet.

The boys and I are going to work on emptying the bookcases later today (they don’t know this yet. Another little-known bonus about having teenagers in the house? Free labor). Tomorrow, we’ll work on moving everything out of the way for the floor guy. We’re going to buy some felt furniture protectors to put on all the furniture legs so when we put all of the furniture back into the room, it doesn’t scratch up our floors. And that reminds me, we need to buy a floor protector for my computer chair – one without the teeth, obviously.

So yeah. We’re the sort of people who toss ideas around and then BAM, do it.

Hey man, we don’t mess around.

Politics

A Little Thing Called FACTS

From American Thinker:

President Obama says that statistics like the ones I listed show how deep the Great Recession was and that he didn’t create it.The blame, he says, belongs to President George W. Bush.

While it’s true that President Bush contributed to the problems we face today, these are undeniable facts: President Bush has been out of office for 3 years; the downward spiral in every major category has accelerated under President Obama; and on President Obama’s watch, the United States is rapidly becoming an insolvent nation. These are good reasons not to support Obama in 2012.

Now seriously. HOW can you support a man who has done nothing for this country in the last three years? HOW can you support a man who has made our country worse?!?

Politics aside – you can’t ignore the facts. President Obama doesn’t know what he’s doing. President Obama doesn’t have our best interests in mind. President Obama doesn’t even LIKE our country – why would he work to make it better?

So, we have had almost three full years to watch Barack Obama in action. One can not help but come away with the idea that Barack Obama has little use for the American people. He seems contemptuous of us all and it seems that he believes that we are deserving of the hardships we are experiencing because of our many failings. It would perhaps be best if Barack Obama and the American people were to come to a parting of the ways come November 2012. It would be unfair to expect that Barack Obama continue to suffer the indignity of having to be President of such a bunch of unambitious, unimaginative, unwilling, soft and lazy individuals that he obviously believes us to be.

It’s time for some POSITIVE Hope and Change, folks.

Let’s try this again …

Life-condensed

Simple Pleasures

An early morning fog, so cold that it crystallizes the trees and transforms the world into something ethereal.

A hot cup of coffee in my favorite coffee mug.

A quiet morning.

Glimpsing the little boys in my men children.

My husband’s sleepy eyes.

Sweet-smelling lotions.

Sunny days.

5 o’clock.

Life, New Bathrooms

It’s Time to Tear Down Those Walls

Okay. The construction project I’ve been eluding to?

Is our bathrooms.

Our front bathroom is long and narrow – it’s like peeing in a hallway. Our back bathroom, which is technically the “master” bath? Is tiny. Personally, our bathrooms don’t bother me, but they’ve bothered Kevin since the moment we moved into our house. This is one of those projects we’ve been dying to do since day one.

Now is the time.

Kevin started shopping for construction guys last month. He found a guy with a pretty decent website and called him out to talk to us. We liked him so much and was impressed with his years of service, that we didn’t even bother calling anyone else. We also liked the fact that this guy specialized in bathrooms.

Kevin has been playing around with a construction/blue print program and put this diagram together of what he wants our bathrooms to look like:

bathrooms

In essence, we are tearing down one wall, and extending another wall to put the tub in the master bathroom. We picked out the shower material and color as well as the tub color while the guy was here and we’ve been running around to various places checking out sinks, tile and mirrors so that we can tell the guy what we want when they get started.

We ended up going with our faithful tile guys, Color Tile. We love their selections and they are always so helpful. While we were looking for our bathroom tile, we actually found some hand-scraped wood for our family room. We are tearing out the carpet and replacing it with hardwood floors.

I can’t wait for that to be done – but one project at a time. We had actually toyed with the idea of doing both construction projects at the same time but … UGH. What a mess and hassle that would be, so we’ll just have to be patient.

Bathrooms first.

I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures to show our progress. It’s fun planning this stuff, but it’s even more fun WHEN IT’S DONE.

Our contractor is supposed to be calling us around the 15th, but we’re getting impatient. Kevin is going to call them tomorrow and see what their start times are looking like. We’re anxious to get this project started.

Life

Hello 2012, It’s Nice to Meet You

So. Resolutions.

They’re useful … if you stick to them.

But let’s be honest – how many of us really stick to them?

Maybe it’s the whole “resolution” stigma. It’s become so passé that no one really takes them seriously anymore.

“I’m going to make some New Year resolutions!” chirps one overly-enthusiastic friend.

“Sure, sure,” another friend answers while stifling a bored yawn.

Exactly.

So. Let’s spice things up a bit, let’s not call them resolutions, let’s call them “treats.” Let’s picture these treats dangling from a sturdy rope above our heads. And these treats are TASTY. They are SCRUMPTIOUS. They sparkle whenever a breeze gently pushes them into motion in bright sunshine. They smell heavenly. And we know that once we reach these treats, they will be satisfying and oh so worth the effort.

That’s how I picture them, at least.

So here goes — I’m displaying my personal treats, in a very big, clear display case for all the world to view, analyze and criticize.

Feel free to hold me accountable.

Manage my energy levels. Which is really a round-about way of telling you I need to exercise. (Hey! I saw that yawn!!). Now that I’m working full-time, I must, must, MUST get control of my energy levels. My new job (I’m a scheduler for eight neurosurgeons – I know, you’re impressed, stop denying it), is mentally EXHAUSTING. It doesn’t SOUND like it would be exhausting – how hard is it to schedule appointments?? But. BUT. It’s so much more than that. It’s making referrals, it’s pre-certing tests with insurance companies, it’s answering calls from patients, it’s answering flags (requests) from nurses … well, you get the idea.

So, I’m tired. All. The. Freaking. Time. And my body is breaking down. Day. By. Day. Since I sit all day, every day, my body has grown stiff, and unused. Body parts are creaking, popping and groaning and I know it’s mainly because I’ve been physically inactive. Sure. Some of it is age, but most of it is because I’m not USING it.

Use it or lose it.

The thing is, I LIKE to exercise. I know. That makes me even MORE weird, but there you go – I like to sweat. As long as I’m in a position TO sweat (pre-shower, dirty hair, no where to go, time to get cleaned up), I’m COOL with the whole notion of abusing my body. I like how it makes me feel. I like what it does to my body. My problem is, finding the time to devote to it. Because if I’m going to do this, it has to be done right. If I’m going to exercise, then I want to EXERCISE. I don’t take the half-ass route, I’m in it to get results. Because if I’m going to devote the time to do something, then damn it, it BETTER pay off.

I ordered Zumba Fitness 2 for the Wii yesterday. I’ve heard a lot of cool things about Zumba – I work with a gal who is actually a Zumba instructor. It sounds fun. I DIG the workouts where I get to punch, dance or kick my way to a healthy place. They’re fun. I’ve used the EA Sports programs for the Wii in the past, and they’re fun, too. I just want something I can mix things up with because it keeps me interested and shakes things up a bit. I still plan on using my treadmill … actually, I plan on doing BOTH. Before work. Every other day. Because I know me. And I know I’ll be too tired to do anything when I get home from work.

And that’s the key to a successful workout program, my friends. KNOWING YOURSELF. Find something that you can enjoy, or at the very least, tolerate. Do you like the water? Then do some aqua therapy. (I’ve heard good things about aqua therapy from our patients). Do you like to dance? Try Zumba. Do you like to walk? Invest in a treadmill and watch your favorite programs while walking.

In other words? Try different things and find out what works for you. THEN? Reward yourself whenever you meet a personal goal. It’ll give you something to work toward. As I tell Dude, ALL THE TIME, humans need goals. They need something to work toward. Otherwise, we get fat and lazy. Both figuratively and literally.

So. Improve energy level. Check.

Write. OH MY GOSH. I’ve done so little writing this past year, it actually makes me sick to my stomach. The problem is? It takes MENTAL ENERGY to write. And MENTAL ENERGY is something I don’t have a lot of right now. (See above point). How do you squeeze more juice from an already dry and withered tomato??

Exactly. You don’t. So I need to find a way of re-hydrating that tomato. I need to find a way to replenish my mental reserves, reach deep down into that reservoir that I KNOW has to be there somewhere and coax those creative juices to the top.

Maybe I’ll try writing on the mornings that I’m not exercising, because again, it HAS to be before work because I’m completely brain dead after work.

Hence the reason you get bombarded with posts on the weekends and it’s a graveyard in my neck of the blog-o-sphere during the week.

Take more pictures. I really enjoy reading blogs where they take pictures of small, everyday things. Because life is not only about the big things, it’s about the small things, too. I want to start a habit of reaching for my camera at every turn.

Like last night, for instance. When the clock struck midnight and we all drank sparkling grape juice out of wine glasses and went outside on our front porch and pulled party poppers with confetti inside … the little moments are worth remembering.

Travel. Which seems impossible since Kevin and I both work full time. But I earn some pretty awesome time off hours through my job and Kevin is self-employed, which equals flexibility, and I don’t want to grow old and look back on my life and say, “Wow. I really worked way too much and didn’t experience life NEARLY enough.”

You know? I’m sure ya’ll can relate.

And since we earn frequent flyer miles and have quite a few saved up and the company we have frequent flyer miles with (American Airlines) has filed bankruptcy and the likelihood that we will lose our frequent flyer miles is looming over my head (though Kevin seems to think American Airlines will honor them, and they SAY they will honor them, but let’s be real here), I want to cash them in before we lose them.

Use them or lose them. (Seems to be my mantra lately).

And it’s now January. Which is the month that Kevin and I start planning where we want to go for our vacation. We could do another cruise, and we might, (we’re big cruise people. Seriously. It’s not as expensive as you might think, especially when you take all of the “extras” into consideration – ports, food, etc), but I’m thinking something a little different this year. I’m thinking of taking some long weekends, like just me and Kevin. The boys … are getting older and don’t seem as excited about taking vacations with us anymore. I mean, they’re 19 and 16 – would YOU want to hang out with your parents for a solid week at that age??

Exactly.

And taking long weekends to a few places might be more fun than taking a solid week to cruise somewhere. At the very least, it’s different. I’m thinking of taking two, possibly three, long weekends (and I’m talking Thursday to Sunday) to: New York, Washington DC, and maybe someplace west, like Seattle or possibly San Francisco.

At any rate, we’ll end up doing something, I’m just not sure what yet. And I’m excited. Because I look forward to these trips every year. (See? Working toward goal equals a happy human).

And I think I’ll stop there. I’m feeling full. And we all know that when you feel full, you should stop eating.

These are my personal treats dangling over my head for 2012:

  • Manage energy levels
  • Write
  • Take more pictures
  • Travel

Now. All I need is a step ladder.

(Because no one said anything about keeping it honest. hehe).

2011 Year-in-Review

Here is a pictorial walk through our 2011 …

JANUARY

Stomach Staples

I know. What a way to start this off … but this is how I started 2011 – with staples in my stomach. I spent last Christmas in the hospital getting three feet of my intestine cut out of me. My large intestine was so knotted up that I couldn’t, erm, pass anything and it got so bad that I ended up looking six months pregnant and feeling like I was going to literally explode from the pressure. And even though life has gotten back to normal for me, *ahem*, I now have a permanent poochy belly. It’s not as bad as it was right after my surgery, but it’s still there. I’m going to work on getting rid of it now that I’m feeling the urge to get back into shape.
