Weekend Snapshot(s) – Flooded

When it rains, it pours …

And how true that was for us this past Friday.

We had a low develop right over Springfield so that we had a line of storms continously pass over us for nearly 24 straight hours. Just when the storms looked like they were going to dissipate, they gathered strength and reformed and it continued to pummel us all day. As a result? Our city flooded, including us.

I had to battle the storms to pick up my nephews. I had promised them they could come over and spend the night, come rain and high water.

I had no idea the heavens would take me quite so literally.

The boys and I set out around 10:30. We had to go all the way to Willard, which is about a thirty minute drive from our house. I drove almost the entire way with my windshield wipers at full blast and still couldn’t see that well.

The rain let up a bit as we drew closer to their house, but we saw a wicked streak of lightening directly in front of us and it was within a mile – a bit too close for comfort.

The thunder rocked my car.

As we drove into the driveway and I got out to help my nephews put their stuff in my car, another bout of lightening zapped so close to me, I heard the sizzle/crackle as it made contact. Split seconds later, I remember thinking, “Shit. I’m standing under a tree with an umbrella. I’m a human lightning rod.”

The thunder was so loud I couldn’t hear for thirty minutes afterward. And my heart was pumping so hard I felt light-headed. It was that scary.

We all made it back to our house safely, but the rain continued to fall in heavy sheets. I began to get nervous when I noticed standing water, about six inches deep, all around our house. Even though my husband had had the foresight to dig out vent wells, I was afraid there was so much water it would go over those vent wells.

It did.

When the worst of the storm finally moved past us, I went outside to take some pictures. I was SHOCKED to see the amount of water gushing down our streets.

This was our neighbor’s driveway.

Neighbor's driveway

It’s a good thing they didn’t try to come home during this time period or they might have been swept from their own driveway.

The water traveled around the corner and entered a huge pipe. The pipe goes under our street and exits in this large drainage system.

Water Drainage 1

This drainage system is about four feet deep. As you can see, we got VERY CLOSE to flooding our ditch, which would have been BAD NEWS for the houses lining that ditch. In fact, you can tell it was already starting to saturate another one of our neighbor’s yard.

Water Drainage 2

I actually took a video of this and will post that tomorrow. While filming, another streak of lightening zipped right over me and you can hear the deafening clap of thunder on the tape. I nearly had a heart attack and high-tailed it back to my house shortly after that.

It began raining pretty hard as soon as I reached my house. After discarding damp shoes and making sure the cameras were still dry, I walked to our bedroom to look out of our window to see how much rain we had gotten up to that point:

5 Inches of Rain

In case you can’t read that? It was FIVE INCHES. Of rain. In less than 12 hours.

I thought we had broken a record, but after talking to my parents yesterday, they told me that back in 1999 we had gotten EIGHT INCHES of rain. Their backyard and storage shed flooded and they had just moved to town and a lot of their belongings had gotten soaked. We must not have gotten as much rain over here or I would have remembered it but I can guarantee I’ll remember June 13, 2008 when we received five inches of rain and had to put fans in our crawl space to dry it out.

Getting this much rain this fast is pretty unusual for this area. I was pretty stressed about water making it under our house (and washing away the new driveway we just had REPAVED the day before – luckily, it held up pretty well and we’ve packed some dirt around it to try and prevent any more water getting underneath it), but any damage we sustained was NOTHING compared to some areas of our city.

You can see photos here, if you wish.

Weekend Snapshot – Climbing the Walls

My nephews are in town to visit for two weeks. And being the coolest aunt on earth (let’s pretend that’s true, shall we?), I have been on a mission to entertain them while they are here.

Well, me and my mom. πŸ˜€

Let’s switch gears for a minute: my kids and my sister’s kids, are most likely the biggest video game/computer geeks you’ll ever meet via cybernet. These guys are so geeky they squirt binary code every time they walk.

I’m not trying to be cute, nor even derogatory, when I tell you this: it’s simply the truth. These kids would much rather spend their days with their faces glued to the TV/monitor screens than step one toe outside. In fact, I often mention doing something outside just so I can see the stark terror in their eyes – it amuses me. *grin*

Overall, this determination to live their lives through imaginary worlds doesn’t concern me (much), but to offer balance and to ward off any serious weirdness later on down the road, I do occasionally FORCE my boys to step away from their virtual reality and you know, join the rest of the human race.

Oh sure, they grumble, groan and are generally cranky with me whenever I step in and rip their imaginary personas away from them, but I think, deep down, in the core of their hearts and their very nerdy beings, they are thankful that I’ve forced them to come up for air.

At least, I tell myself that. *grin*

With my nephews in town, my mom and I wanted to do something with them other than look at the back of their heads as they frantically give their thumbs a work out. So, my mom came up with the BRILLIANT (again, not being sarcastic) idea of taking them rock climbing.

I’ll let you digest that bit o’ information before moving on. Picture this: The Revenge of the Nerds rock climbing. Isn’t that an amusing thought?

Now before anyone goes and gets the wrong idea, I’m treating their chosen past times with humor because truly, it’s who they are. It’s what interests them. They want to go on to college and become computer programmers and hey, who am I to stand in the way of them making boo-goo bucks, right? I mean, we all know the smart, nerdy, brainy types are the ones who (generally) go on and make something of their lives, right?

And my boys and my nephews certainly fall into the brainy category. Trust me.

But come on, what sort of mother would I be if I just stepped back and allowed them to disassociate themselves from reality? I’m constantly policing their online activities, making frequent and unannounced stops to look over their shoulders and see what they’re doing, or studying the minimized windows to make sure they aren’t doing something they shouldn’t be doing.

And I think we’ve struck a fairly reasonable balance, if you want the truth. As a result of my being “cool” about their activities, they don’t feel compelled to hide anything from me (at least, I hope they’re not).

But I’m simply not the type of personality that can step back and allow them to miss out on all the “real” world fun. So, we took all four boys out to lunch, to see the new Indiana Jones movie and then … rock climbing.

We took them to the Petra Rock Climbing Gym.

The boys got suited up …

And then stood back to stare in awe at the huge walls they were about to climb.

(Look at how skinny these boys are! I didn’t realize just HOW skinny my kids were until they got those harnesses on. I feed them! Honest!!)

The instructor (who I thought was sort of cute in a jail bait sort of way), spent a considerable amount of time trying to teach GD how to tie a fancy-smancy knot.

IMG_1584
He never really got the hang of it.

After the boys were suited up, the older kids went off with the guy instructor and the younger boys went off with the girl instructor. MK and M started off on the beginner wall.

IMG_1597
MK took to it like the monkey he is.

IMG_1579
M had a bit more trouble, but after a few minutes, he got the hang of it.

GD scaled a more advanced wall in record time and rang the cow bell at the top. His self-satisfied smile down at me was WELL WORTH the effort of dragging his butt to the gym, trust me.

IMG_1580

He also scaled back down like a pro, too.

IMG_1581

After their initial success, all the boys decided to try a harder wall. MK and M went up the wall GD and A vacated with MK making it all the way to the top (but wouldn’t do it again because it was a bit too high for him) and M made it halfway up before getting too shaky and came back down.

The older boys tried to climb a sheer wall with very few hand/foot holds.

IMG_1600
A nearly made it all the way to the top before he ran into some trouble and had to come back down.

GD, his testosterone on overdrive, attempted this wall.

IMG_1601

Unfortunately, he was trying to climb not only up, but out, and that proved too difficult for him.

IMG_1602

He had to give up after losing his hold several times and ended up swinging like a little lost pendulum.

Overall, all the boys did remarkably well. I suppose the desire to climb and conquer is instinctually embedded in their male brains. Either that, or they were pretending they were in one of their army video games.

*sigh*

IMG_1574
(Note the military stance – and GD’s cranky I’m-tired-is-it-time-to-leave face. hehe)

The bottom line? They had fun (I think), they got some exercise and they slept really, really well that night. πŸ˜€

Who’s up for more fun with Aunt Karen? Hhmm?
