Scared of Everything

“It was a dark and stormy night …”

“Are there frogs, mommy?” my four-year old daughter asked, her eyes huge.

I smiled and hugged her. “No. No yucky frogs.”

“Frogs scare me,” she said and snuggled closer.

“I know, baby.” I went back to the book. “It was a dark–”

“How dark? I’m scared of the dark.”

I sighed. “I know honey. It wasn’t too dark.” I opened my mouth to start again.

“Are there big dogs? Big dogs scare me,” she whispered and looked around in terror.

I winced and looked at her scars. “Yeah, me too, baby.”

What I did over my Summer Vacation.

Write exactly 100 words, first person, fact or fiction…What I did over my Summer Vacation.

“So hello! Are you ladies ready to start another school year?”

The five women sitting around me softly cooed their responses.

“Before we get started,” the PTA president cut in, “tell me what you guys did over the summer!”

I found her fake enthusiasm nauseating.

I listened as each described their perfect summers and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes.

“So Karen, what did you do?”

The women each turned to me. I could tell they didn’t really care to hear my answer.

“I helped my husband walk again after his motorcycle accident.”

I savored their shocked expressions.

Never Too Old to Have Fun

I listened to them from my perch on the top step and didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry…

“Can you even believe we’re related to them?”

I watched my parents run around the front yard with squirt bottles. They dodged and swerved the streams as they tried to get each other wet.

“They’re like a couple of children out there!” my sister whined. “What if someone we know drives by and sees them?”

I sighed. Did it really matter? “Look at them,” I said. “They’re having fun. Who cares?”

“I do,” she snapped. “They’re embarrassing.”

Their laughter echoed in my ears. I couldn’t help but smile.

“Where are you going?” my sister asked.

“To get a squirt bottle.”

Saturday Question

And I’m tired of talking.

It’s your turn.

I’ll ask a question, the first person to comment answers my question.

That first commenter then asks his/her question, the next commenter answers the question and then asks a question of his/her own and so on.

Clear as mud?

Here’s my question:

You’re a fly on the wall at your own funeral. What are people saying about you?
