Photo Story Friday: Following in my Husband’s Footsteps

Oh look! Another wonderful excuse to scan old pictures and bore you to tears!! Yay!

Scan10442

Me and my husband in 1989. This was right after his college graduation and he was so deliriously tired he couldn’t keep his eyes open.

Or he was trying to be sexy.

It’s hard to tell sometimes. πŸ˜€

I LOVED this suit! It was a hounds tooth suit and I thought I was DA BOMB in that cutesy little flower tie thingie. I remember wearing this suit to work (at the bank) all the freaking time. I’m glad I had no idea it was so ill-fitting.

Ignorance is bliss, isn’t it?

We’re standing in front of his parent’s fireplace in one of the HUNDREDS of houses they’ve lived in in their lifetime. (Seriously, his folks have lived in dozens of houses – restless spirits, I suppose. They’ve been in their current house the longest but yep, you’ve guessed it, they are looking for a bigger and “better” house. Will these people never learn to stay in one place and save their money??)

It was at that point, after proudly watching my then boyfriend walk down the aisle and accept his diploma, that I knew I WOULD graduate from college someday.

And it happened, only after giving birth to two children, working the night shift at Wal-Mart and 13 long, sleep-deprived years.

It happened.

And I am proud.

Photo Story Friday: The Mysterious Expression

Oh look! Another wonderful excuse to scan old pictures and bore you to tears!! Yay!

One question: What is UP with this expression?

Scan10433

Me and my mom (note how I’m trying to suck my lips into my skull again)

Scan10432

Was I worried? Was I plotting something mischievous? Did I think my lips were delicious? Was I trying to appear older than I really was? Or perhaps that was my pooping face?

It remains a mystery.

One thing I know? My mom is a hottie.

Studying for College, circa 1990

Me, circa 1990. I just started college and I’m studying Algebra. Going to college was a huge culture shock for me. I had been out of high school for a number of years and my scholastic skills were rusty, to say the least.

Actually, I was just happy to BE in college. I waited too long to take my ACT’s and my score wasn’t the best. In fact, I’m pretty sure the school accepted me because I was an older student … or they felt sorry for me because I’m sure I looked like a farm girl straight off the turnip truck.

I believe the plan at the time was to major in finance. I was working at a bank and it just seemed like the natural next step to go to school to study in the field I was currently working in.

It didn’t take long (in fact, I think it was my Calculus class, that I dropped, by the way) for me to figure out that A. I SUCK at math, seriously, I’m SO bad at it that Kevin has forbid me from helping the boys with their math homework because I confuse them so badly and B. I was bored out of my freaking mind. Finance was stale and dry for me.

I then went on to major in journalism and HA! What a joke. I liked it, until I found out that I would actually be required to TALK to people – pfft.

Uh, no.

I ended up majoring Technical (Professional) writing, which was a less lucrative avenue, but one much more suited to me.

This was our apartment and we hadn’t even been married a year. I’m in my jammies (if you look closely, you can see I’m flashing a little bit of flesh) and Kevin was annoying me because I was trying to study and he wanted to take pictures of me.

So, I wouldn’t look at him and tried to ignore him.

He took pictures anyway.

I remember that purple backpack – loved that thing.

I don’t, however, remember that kitchen floor / living room rug combo. Yuk. No wonder we got out of there ASAP. πŸ™‚

Photo Story Friday: Oh Brother

Oh look! Another wonderful excuse to scan old pictures and bore you to tears!! Yay!

Me and my younger brother:

Me and David circa 1989

This was taken at my parents’ house. I think they were living in their trailer and were in Kansas City at this time. I’m thinking I’m about 24 in this picture and my brother is about 17.

I periodically went up to visit them, because I’m a good daughter like that. πŸ™‚ And judging by my smeared eyeliner, this was taken early in the morning and we were giggling about something.

My brother is the biggest clown you’ll ever meet and he used to make me laugh so hard I would get sick afterward.

It doesn’t seem possible that he’s married and has two sons of his own now.

Weird.

Photo Story Friday: Three Blind Mice

Oh look! Another wonderful excuse to scan old pictures and bore you to tears!! Yay!

I’m the mouse in the middle. WHY I felt compelled to wear funky shorty-shorts with multi-colored geometric shapes on them AND black tights, is beyond me. I’m sure we had some sort of plan in mind when we decided to go that route.

Three Blind Mice - circa 1988

This was back when I worked at the bank … 1988 maybe? I remember the gal’s name on my right, Diane, but I can’t for the life of me remember the gal on my left.

We all three worked the lobby windows so we became fast friends. Since we all worked together, we thought it would be cute to dress up as a threesome: the customers loved it! We were three blind mice behind bars so it was quite a sight when people walked into the lobby.

Kevin worked the drive-thru and he dressed up as an older gentleman. He was so convincing, our older lady customers hit on him!!! We all gave him such a hard time about that for weeks afterward! It was truly hilarious.

The rest of the bank dressed up as: Raggedy Ann and Andy, Charlie Chaplin, clown, wicked witch of the west, the bride of Frankenstein, joker, catwoman, and a spider (complete with eight creepy arms!)

We had so much fun working together – I miss those days.

Good lord, look at my poofy hair. And just think, I spent hours wanting to look like that. Pfft. I do believe, though, this was the one and only time I was a size eight. *sigh* To be that skinny again …

Driving a Stick

This was the first, and only, stick-shift car I ever owned: a Nissan Sentra. I believe this picture was taken in 1991 and we were at a park in the spring, judging by the trees.

Kevin was teaching me to drive a stick shift and I must say, I caught on fairly quick.

I ended up driving that car for seven years and it never gave me any trouble. I still love Nissans to this day.

We had to finally trade it in for a van when MK came along. I could handle getting one baby in and out of the back seat, but not two babies.

Kevin asked me to pose like that. I think he was thinking I could look like one of those gorgeous models who drape themselves over a car to try and make it look sexier – as you can see, I FAILED.

I have a TON of old pictures that I need to scan, so hang onto your hats, Fridays are going to get nostalgic.

Let’s start at the beginning, shall we?

First Christmas - circa 87 or 88

Me and Kevin in front of our pitiful Christmas tree in the apartment that we shared. I was around 22 25 and Kevin was 26 29. This was before we were married (*gasp* yes, we lived together before tying the knot) and I’m thinking it was either 1987 or 1988. I’m not exactly sure which, but I’d guess ’87 This would have been 1990 judging by the empty tree branches, and the fact that we’re wearing wedding rings (thanks Heidi!). Yeah, we were THAT poor. We couldn’t even afford decorations for our tree.

Look at how CUTE my husband is!! Wow. What a babe. RAWR.

And yes, *sigh* I was one THOSE women who wore dorky holiday sweaters/sweatshirts. And I think I’m wearing Christmas earrings too, though it’s hard to see. (Okay fine, I still wear dorky holiday sweaters, hush).

My hair? I used to hot roll my hair every day and I swear, I spent an hour each day JUST on my hair. I was never so glad to see straight hair come back into fashion in my life.

So was Kevin. πŸ˜›

I also want to know what color lipstick I’m wearing because I like it! (This is probably one of six photos with me wearing lipstick – I simply don’t do it very often).

Kevin wouldn’t be caught dead in sweaters now.

And it’s good to know I had THUNDER thighs even back then.

That’s strangely comforting.
