Friday (Edible) Craft: Making Lunch Time Special

I have a “thing” about packing my kids’ lunches.

Well, first of all, I do it. Every day. I figure, it’s the least I can do – heck, the boys are barely awake and moving in the mornings, let alone THINKING about anything other than trying to wake up.

Secondly, I actually put some thought into my kids’ lunches. I consciously try and buy different and fun things to put into their lunches every week. For example, every week they get a lunchable – always a different kind each week. I make one traditional sandwich one day, put a crustless peanut butter and jelly sandwich in one day, and Hot Pockets another day. Every Tuesday and Thursday they get to drink soda (Mt. Dew is their favorite) because I figure those are the days of the week when they are dragging and really need the caffeine boost to see them through their day.

In addition, I play around with different deserts and fruit roll-ups – I also put the occasional “good luck on your test” sort of note in there as well.

In short, I really enjoy packing my kids’ lunches. And apparently, they love it too because neither one of them have bought lunch in YEARS. (Yes, I’m being serious).

As a result of this “obsession”, I tend to really enjoy getting new ideas for fun things to put into their lunches. Now granted, some of this stuff is a bit hokey for my teenage boys and I never want to embarrass them in front of their friends, but I’m not saying I won’t EVER sneak something like this in just to break up the monotony of their day. *grin*

For example, wouldn’t these be FUN to find in your lunch??

School of Fish

It won’t take long to reel kids in for snack time with these sweet-and-salty goldfish.

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
Dried apricots
Mini pretzels
Cream cheese
Mini chocolate chips

1. For each fish, slit one end of a dried apricot and insert the bottom of a mini pretzel. Pinch the apricot around the pretzel to hold it in place.

2. For a fish eye, pipe on a small dot of cream cheese (a plastic sandwich bag with a corner snipped off works well for this) and then press a mini chocolate chip, tip down, into the cream cheese.

Mini Caramel Apples

Bite-size versions of the fall fair treat, these tiny “caramel” apples are a great party snack.

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
4-inch lollipop sticks
Melon baller
Granny Smith apples (one apple makes about 8 mini apples)
Butterscotch or peanut butter chips
Chopped nuts, nonpareils, sprinkles, shredded coconut (optional)
Small paper candy cups

1. First, cut the lollipop sticks in half at an angle (the pointy end will go into the apple pieces easier). With the melon baller, scoop little balls out of the apple. Each ball should have a section of apple peel. Push half of a lollipop stick into the peel of each ball. Pat the apple pieces dry.

2. Melt the chips according to the package directions. Dip and swirl the mini apples in the melted chips, then roll the apples in nuts, sprinkles, nonpareils, or coconut, if desired. Place the mini apples in paper candy cups to set.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Stars

These little sandwiches make the perfect finger foods for picky eaters. (You can also watch a video on how to make these).

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
2 slices white bread
2 slices whole wheat bread
Peanut butter
Jelly
1 1/2-inch star cookie cutter

1. Use this recipe as an opportunity to teach your kids how to use cookie cutters and spread peanut butter and jelly on bread.

2. TIP: Jazz up your sandwiches by using mini cookie cutters to cut puzzle pieces out of white and whole wheat bread. Swap the whole wheat shapes with the white, then press them into place.

3. Using the star cookie cutter (available at party supply stores), cut two stars out of a slice of the white bread and two stars out of a slice of the whole wheat bread.

4. Fit the whole wheat stars into the star-shaped holes in the white bread and the white stars into the whole wheat bread.

5. Now the bread is ready for the peanut butter and jelly. Have your child use a table knife to smoothly spread on peanut butter and jelly, working slowly to avoid tearing the bread.

6. Assemble the sandwich, then wrap in plastic. Makes 2 star-studded sandwiches.

Friday Craft: Backpack Buddies

Okay school … it’s all we can think about right now. Or at least, it’s all I can think about right now. GD is a SOPHOMORE in HIGH SCHOOL and MK is an EIGHTH grader this year.

That still seems so surreal to me.

Anyway, school – here we come.

My kids are too old for this stuff (unfortunately), but I thought it would be fun to pass on this information to all of you that have grade school/middle school kids that are still into this stuff.

Here are some cool backpack buddies for the kids to hang on their backpacks. I don’t know about you, but sometimes these little buddies can be quite comforting during the first weeks of school.

Here are three that I thought were especially fun. You can find more here, if you’re interested.

1. Mini-Fabric Backpacks
(Great for storing extra coins!)

null

You Need:
Backpack Pattern
9″ x 12″ Fabric Scrap
9″ x 12″ piece of Medium Weight Fusible Interfacing (Pelon)
Iron
Inkjet Printer
Scissors
Fabric Glue
1/4″ Velcro Scrap
Beads, Craft Foam or Fabric Markers for Decorating

Instructions:
Fuse interfacing to back of fabric following manufacturer’s instructions. Trim to 8½” x 11. Print backpack pattern on fabric. Cut out on outer lines. You will have two pieces — the backpack and the straps. Cut the straps down the middle solid line so you will now have three pieces.

All of the remaining solid lines are fold lines. The dotted lines are decorations. Fold on each solid line with the fabric side out. Crease with iron. Use fabric glue to secure the folded straps so the interfacing doesn’t show.

On backpacks there are four flaps — two on the sides and two on the bottoms. Use fabric glue to secure the bottom flaps to the bottom of the back pack. Use fabric glue to secure the side flaps to the to the back of the backpack.

Glue the straps to the top back of the backpack forming a loop with each strap. You will probably want to trim the straps to make them shorter before gluing.

Attach a piece of Velcro under the flap to hold it closed.

Decorate with beads, craft foam or fabric markers.

2. Yarn-Looking, Er, Creature

null

I just love this little guy. Can you imagine your son/daughter lovingly stroking this little creature while waiting for the bus or someone to pick him/her up? I’m sure it would be comforting. 🙂

You Need:
Neon Wireless Chenille
Plastic Clips
Wiggle Eyes — 10mm
Low Temp Glue Gun, or Tacky Glue
Scissors

Instructions:
Cut a 6 two yard pieces of wireless chenille. Thread all six pieces to the middle through the ring on a plastic clip. Gather all strands together and split into 3 bunches. Braid. Cut a small piece of wireless chenille to tie off, double knotting tightly around the bottom of the braid. Trim ends. Glue on wiggle eyes.

3. Backpack Address Book

null

Okay, HELLO?! What little, sociable person wouldn’t want a little address book to keep track of his/her friends?? How cute!

You need:
Mini Address Book
Plastic Clip
2 Feet Black Rat-tail Satin Cord
6 Pony Beads
Contact Paper
Scissors
Two 15mm Wiggle Eyes
Low Temp Glue Gun
2″ Piece of Feather Boa

Instructions:
Tie satin cord to plastic clip at middle. Use hot glue gun to attach both pieces of the satin cord along the spine of the address book. Leave about 1/2″ of cord between the clip and the address book.

Cover book with contact paper. Trim close to edge of book. Glue on wiggle eyes and piece of boa.

Add beads to each end of satin cord. Tie with knot. Trim close.

Have fun! If you do any of these crafts, post a picture and let me know!

I’m off to get some work done – have a GREAT Friday!

My question:

What are you doing this weekend?

My answer:

We’ll be camping, in 90 degree weather and 80% humidity at our mini Las Vegas. Other than eating out at a Chinese buffet and driving go-carts, we really don’t have anything else planned except relax and enjoy each others’ company – if that’s possible with two brooding, moody teenage boys. 🙂

Oh, one last thing …

Ask and Answer Game

Uh ………..

I don’t have anything to talk about today. (*GASP* Shocker!) So … how’s about we play a fun little game? Are you in? SUPER! Let’s get started:

Let’s play an ask and answer game.

Here’s how it works:

The person before you has asked a question, please answer that question and then ask a question for the next person to answer. That’s it!

Please, keep it impersonal and ask fun questions.

Got it? Good. Now let’s play:

Question for the first person:

Would you rather buy books or borrow them from a library?

Friday Craft: Boogie Monsters

I’m feeling crafty today, you?

Great! Here’s a fun craft to keep the kiddies busy today:

Boogie Monsters (Okay, I confess, this craft caught my attention because of the boogie/booger reference. I’m shallow – I know this. 😀 )

These zany desktop dancers have the “cents” to stand on their own two feet.

CRAFT MATERIALS:
Tacky glue
3 (12-inch) pipe cleaners
2 medium pom-poms (ours were 1 1/2 inches in diameter)
2 googly eyes
Felt
Tiny pom-pom
Wooden skewer
Feather
Poster tack
2 pennies
2 penny-size buttons

Time needed: About 1 Hour

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Glue a 7-inch length of pipe cleaner between the pom-poms for arms. Let the glue dry.

2. For legs, fold a 9-inch pipe cleaner length in half and glue the fold to the bottom of the lower pom-pom.

3. Attach each googly eye to a small felt circle, then glue the eyes, felt ears, and a tiny pom-pom nose to the face.

4. For each horn, coil a 4-inch pipe cleaner length around the skewer, then glue the horn onto the head. Fold the ends of each arm to form hands. Glue the feather tail in place.

5. Add a foot to each leg by using a small ball of poster tack to sandwich each end between a button and a penny, as shown.

You GOTTA love Family Fun!!

My question:

How would you like to spend your elder years?

My answer:

I would love to have a cabin in the mountains, just me and the husband, far enough away that I could feel free and isolated, but close enough that we could go into town to buy groceries or eat dinner. I would love to go for long, cool, bug-free walks and sit on my deck overlooking our magnificent and scenic backyard and simply … write. *sigh* Heaven. 🙂

Friday Fill-In:

1. Oh, I can’t wait until I have a few projects that have been hanging over my head DONE.

I’ve been procrastinating on a few things and quite frankly? I don’t know why. I ENJOY what I’m doing, so much so, that I find myself licking my lips in anticipation of WORKING on them. I think maybe I’m dragging them out because I’m savoring every last minute it requires to work on it. Or I’m just trying to sugar coat the fact that I’m procrastinating. 😉

2. V8 Peach/Mango Fushion is the first thing I see when I open my refrigerator.

Seriously, have ya’ll TRIED this stuff?! It’s dee-lish! AND good for you! What more could you ask for. *grin*

3. I never leave home without chapstick.

HA! You thought I was going to say cell phone, didn’t you. *grin* I abhor my cell phone. Actually, I abhor talking on the phone, period. I much prefer to communicate via email. Why? Because I have time to articulate my thoughts before hitting that send button. When I’m talking on the phone? I always get tongue-tied and sound like a total moron.

Why chapstick? Because I’m self-conscious about my lips. They’re like dry and scaly all the time – gross!

4. If I were a condiment, I would be mustard because I’m spicy like that.

I’m the sort of person people can leave or take. Your sandwich would still taste fine without the mustard, but wouldn’t it taste SO MUCH BETTER with the mustard? 😀 I suppose I’m saying, I’m bland, in a spicy sort of way. Does that make sense? Moving on then …

5. Indecisiveness is really high up on my list of pet peeves.

OMG. Make a decision already. NOTHING drives me crazier than people who him-ha over simple decisions. OR, who can’t make a decision without consulting an army of people. Geez.

6. The last thing I thought of before I went to bed was “I wonder if I could keep my eyes open long enough to squeeze another hour’s worth of work out”.

I’m pretty sure I was asleep before I even finished that thought – so – apparently not. *grin*

Bonus! I also learned that tanning shortly before bed? NOT A GOOD IDEA. I felt like someone had dipped me into a vat of hot sauce and I tossed and turned and kicked off the covers all night.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to enduring a sleepover, tomorrow my plans include stumbling through my chores due to lack of sleep (see sleepover part) and Sunday, I want to continue planning our Disney World vacation for next summer!

My boys think I’m crazy for planning this vacation – because Disney World is for little kids, you see *snort* – but I’m determined to go at least once in my life. Question is, I need to find a really good vacation package. Something that includes the price to get into the parks, a Disney resort of some sort AND our flight down there. If any Disney veterans are reading this, I would TRULY appreciate some links!!
